The end of May is fast approaching! Which means my time in Dodge is coming to an end 😭😭😭

This is something I haven’t really talked about publicly, but now feels right, so bare with me

For a very long time I have struggled with mental illness. My life has been heavily impacted by severe depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. I started experimenting with drugs at the age of 15 and they quickly became all consuming. I started to gain the freedom of being a teen at the same time as my addiction began, muddying the line of what independence truly is.

I was an active student participating in extra curriculars, at the same time I was using substance after substance. I was never home, doing anything I could to try and feel better. I had decided before i graduated highschool that if I hadn’t ODd by the time I turned 23 I would be done living.

It was an extremely hard path to get clean. No one in my circle that could have done anything knew. The adults that did know didn’t do anything. At the end of the day it was me, more sad than I ever thought possible, fighting tooth and nail to stay alive. I didn’t go to rehab or meetings. It was me holding my own hand, wiping my own tears, taking it day by day.

As of March 20th 2 years sober from alcohol
And March 23rd 5 years clean off drugs

Everyday I am thankful I made it through. I am still so connected with that version of me, this being my 5 years makes me so emotional. I love her so much and I’m honored she pushed so I could live.

I used to not want to talk about my struggles for lots of reasons. To save others feelings. To remain “professional”. Out of fear. This is my story and I am ready to share it.
