On August 4th the Louisiana Ascension Council proposed an ordinance to ban the sale and possession of Kratom in Ascension Parish 
The Parish Council meets again this Thursday August 18, 2022 at 6pm at 607 E Worthey Street, Gonzales LA 70737. 

The AKA legislative team will attend the Thursday meeting and is hosting a webinar tonight, August 16th at 8pm CT to help prepare advocates for speaking at the Thursday hearing. Zoom registration links have been emailed out.

For the meeting on the 18th: After the introduction the ordinance will be read for public hearing, discussion and adoption (as is or with amendments) 

This meeting is open to the public and anyone who wishes to support (green card) or oppose (red card) this item can fill out a card at the beginning of the meeting and when the item is addressed your card will be read and if you chose you can speak on the item for 3 minutes.

ARTICLE VIII. – KRATOM Sec. 11-210. Possession, Sale and Consumption of Kratom. 

(1) The Parish of Ascension does hereby declare that the use of Kratom is a serious problem affecting the health and welfare of all citizens. The parish pursuant to its police powers does further declare and determine that all reasonable steps should and must be taken to prohibit the possession, sale and consumption of Kratom by citizens of Ascension Parish.

(2) The purpose of this section also is to provide for the enforcement of the ordinance from which this section was derived. (b) Violation. It shall be illegal for any person to sell, purchase, consume, or possess, either actual or constructive, Kratom in the Parish of Ascension.

(d) Penalties. (1) Whoever violates the provisions of this section shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars ($500.00) or imprisoned for not more than six (6) months, or both.
