Today would have been my youngest brother's 61st birthday. In this gambling world full of pitfalls, I always knew I had one person that would always have my back.

In the early years of this century and much of the last the 'Tall Poppy'--Doyle Brunson was the man to beat. Huck Seed & Howard Lederer, Ralph Rudd & myself, & Daniel Negreneau all fell short. He bellowed, "What's better than 1 Nakano?" Then he would answer, "2 Nakano's" and laugh pleased with himself. Well, we made a low ball match play with Doyle playing one ball.

He played better than I thought he could but we stayed in the match. On 18, if we won the hole, we would win $25k but a tie was useless. The 18th was a par 5 with a protuding elevated 3 tiered green protected by water on 3 sides and bunkers all around. In 2, Doyle & I were about 120 yards out. Wally was at 80 yards. I went 1st. My shot was only going to get halfway home so now I needed the Lady of the Lake to reach out and toss my ball another 50 yards. No Lady and my ball splashed. Doyle didn't even get it up and it splashed well short of the other bank. Wally was the last man standing but he had to carry 40 yards of water and hit the green in the middle tier or risk a 3 putt. We held our breaths but he took an easy smooth swing and nailed the center of the green and raised his arms in victory! Doyle and I clapped. Doyle was a gracious loser. Very few can claim they beat the "Tall Poppy" but on that afternoon at the Tustin Ranch Golf Club, Wally could always make that claim!

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of the death of Fred Eguchi. Friends showed up by the scores to show support to his widow Tracy and their 2 sons who are now the men in the family of the Vine. Fred was the quintessential wine bar host. He had stories of everyone he loved to share. I must have heard over a couple hundred times that I was one of Jerry Buss' close friends and I was a good poker player. Now where am I going to go to get my ego massaged? With old friends Gary Fujii, Wendy & Scott Momii. "There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't met."

I wish the science and research was more available back then but the ALDH2 STAR Symposium that made a major impact wasn't until 2019. ✨🌿🔑💚😊♻️👍✨
