You turn brown after a spray tan because of a harmless chemical process called the Maillard reaction. The active ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetone), reacts with the amino acids in your skin’s outermost, dead cell layer, which produces a natural brown pigment.

The coloring process unfolds in a few stages:
1. The Guide Color: Many solutions contain immediate cosmetic bronzers that give you instant color. This acts as a map to ensure even application.
2. The Reaction: While the guide color sits on the surface, the colorless DHA begins to interact with your skin proteins. This development process usually takes 8 to 24 hours.
3. The Final Tan: When you take your first shower, the instant cosmetic bronzer washes away, leaving behind the true, developed brown tan underneath.

Because this color change only affects the dead skin cells on the very surface of your body, your tan will naturally fade over 7 to 10 days as those cells shed.

‼️ I feel like a lot of people go get a tan then just go about their day as normal, & you can’t do that. It will shorten the life of your tan. It ideally takes 12 hours up to 24 hours to properly cure. If there’s blotchiness, or streakiness, more than likely it’s not the actual technician’s fault, it’s how you cared for your skin before & after. So do yourself a favor and invest proper time for before and after care while booking your appointments 🔥🔅

🚨A Blotchy Tan can have a wide range of causes, but it very rarely the solution.

Common causes of patchy fading include:
* Uneven exfoliation or lingering dead skin cells
* Dry or oily skin that absorbs solution inconsistently
* Disrupted skin pH from alcohol, fragrances, deodorant, or sunscreen
* Excessive water exposure from showers, chlorine, sweating, rain, or snow
* Friction from clothing or poor post-tan care

➡️Spray tanning solutions cling to the outermost layer of the skin. If that layer contains lingering dead skin cells or flaky areas, the tanning solution absorbs unevenly. Some spots grab more DHA, while others repel it, setting the stage for patchy fading days later. One of the biggest causes of patchy spray tan fading happens after your appointment, not during it. Skipping moisturizer, using the wrong type, or moisturizing inconsistently can cause flaky tans, uneven tan fade, and patchy skin within just a few days.
Spray tans fade as your skin sheds. When skin hydration levels drop, that shedding happens faster and less evenly, causing some areas to lose color while others still hold onto it. 🔅
Proper post-tan care is essential for maintaining a smooth, even fade. Hydration should begin after your first rinse and continue daily throughout the life of your tan.
For best results:
* Begin moisturizing the day after your spray tan
* Use a lightweight, tan-safe moisturizer daily
* Avoid heavy oils that can break down DHA prematurely
* Focus on high-movement and dry-prone areas
So Hydrate as much as possible and moisturize that skin! 💦
