Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds. It is a gentle yet effective exfoliant and skincare ingredient known for its ability to promote skin renewal, improve texture, and address various skin concerns. Mandelic acid has larger molecular size compared to other AHAs like glycolic acid, making it less irritating and suitable for sensitive skin types.

Benefits of mandelic acid in skincare include:

1. Exfoliation: Mandelic acid helps to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, promoting a smoother, brighter complexion.
2. Acne Treatment: It has anti-bacterial properties that can help to reduce acne-causing bacteria on the skin, making it beneficial for treating acne and preventing breakouts.
3. Hyperpigmentation: Mandelic acid can help to lighten dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone by inhibiting melanin production and promoting cell turnover.
4. Anti-Aging: It stimulates collagen production in the skin, improving firmness and elasticity, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
5. Anti-inflammatory: Mandelic acid has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to calm and soothe irritated or inflamed skin.

Mandelic acid is often found in skincare products such as serums, toners, and peels, typically in concentrations ranging from 5% to 10%. It is suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin, but as with any skincare ingredient, it’s essential to patch-test and gradually introduce it into your routine to avoid irritation. Additionally, wearing sunscreen is crucial when using products containing mandelic acid, as it can increase skin sensitivity to the sun.
