Roman glass unguentarium in the form of a dove, containing the remains of a balsam
Sealed since its manufacture, containing the remains of balsam and the liquid in which it was once suspended.
The vessel would be blown and filled through either the open tail or beak, which would then be reheated to seal it. Accessing the contents would require snapping off the beak or tail, which in this case was never done.
Dated to the 2nd half of the 1st c. CE.

My Cleopatra Goats Milk and Honey soap was a wild success at the Spring Mystic Faire & Faerie Market. Made with Mendesian- the perfume Cleopatra wore.
This is by far the most creamy, rich & luxurious soap I’ve created, yet. One need not wonder why this queen brought her enemies to their knees with just one catch of her scent.
Available on our website and choose local pickup if you’re in the Eugene area. 🥰

Roman bird-shaped glass vessels were used as perfume bottles. The liquid was sealed inside the vessels and the tip of the tail had to be broken to remove the perfume. The one in the bottom picture (dated to the 1st century CE) is still intact and filled with the scented content

Beautiful glowing drops of Summer. I have hinted that the Balm of Pompeii would be released as a serum before Christmas. That time is now. This Helichrysum infused Jojoba oil will be its base.
Helichrysum is such a beautiful and fragrant herb. Sacred to the sun god Apollo, Helichrysum translates to “golden sun.”
This stunning plant known colloquially as Immortelle was used widely across the Mediterranean. Famous for its exotic, spicy scent, its use in skincare is well documented In Ancient Roman beauty regimes.
I imagine Roman women reclining beneath cool pine trees, seated beside a fountain, soaking in the Italian sun with this beloved plant oil gracing their skin.
High in the compound neryl acetate, Immortelle is excellent as a cell rejuvenator and potent anti-aging plant ally. Curcumene acts as a balm for an array of skin conditions including swelling, redness, rashes, and scarring.
Serum of Pompeii will be available directly through me before it goes live on my new Etsy site and website. 🥰

Witch’s Butter (Tremella mesenterica)
The medicinal mushroom known as Witch’s Butter is a member of the jelly fungus family. Its unique appearance, bright color and wobbly gelatinous texture is always fun to find out in the forest any time of year … including the winter temps in New England where I haunt. Other common names for witches’ butter include golden jelly fungus, yellow brain, and yellow trembler. Also Fairy Butter (UK and Ireland), Troll’s Butter (Scandinavia) and Menyn Tylna Teg (Wales).
In Eastern European folklore, it was said if you found Witch’s Butter growing on your gate or door, a witch has cast a hex on you and your family. The only way to remove the spell would be to pierce the bright blobby mushroom with something sharp and drain the juices.
Some stories say throwing Witch’s Butter into a fire can protect you from ill-will witchcraft.
In the folklore of Sweden, it was said when witches gathered to steal milk from a family’s cows, pieces of “butter” would be left behind, scattered on the ground once the coven left.
A very similar story out of Lancashire, in England, but in lieu of witches the faerie are dropping the butter:
“In Little Langdale the Busk and the Forge, the latter place only separated from our parish by the Brathay, were regularly visited by fairies — harmless little beings it would seem, of the house-goblin class, for their principal occupation seems to have been churning butter after the family had retired for the night. They were, however, rather thriftless little folk, for near the Forge it was common to find bits of butter scattered in the woods, dropped, it would seem, by the uncanny churners in their morning flight.” (Henry Swainson Cowper, “Hawkshead: (the Northernmost Parish of Lancashire)”; 1899)
Medicinally, Witch’s Butter has been revered as a “beauty mushroom” and is valued as an anti-aging ingredient. It has that fantastic jelly texture, so it’s no surprise it can hold up to five hundred times its weight in water (more than glycerin and hyaluronic acid). Being able to retain so much water, as an ingredient, it can help restore a youthful appearance to the skin. And like oyster mushrooms, Witch’s Butter also contains kojic acid, which can help fade freckles and dark spots (though who would want to – freckles are beautiful!).
Witch’s Butter can also be used in a syrup to treat asthma and cough; and because it’s so hydrating, to help replenish bodily fluids. As in so many other medicinal mushrooms, it also has the potential to lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar, has very high levels of vitamin D, fiber and is loaded with antioxidants. they’ve been shown to have anti-tumor properties.
