In the early 19th century, women colored their nails with buffing compounds. Scented oils were infused with colorants, spread on and left in place until the color transferred to the nails, which were buffed with a chamois cloth until the surface was smooth and shiny.

When washing your hands, occasionally check your cuticles for cuts and tears. These mays seem insignificant, but can lead to nail infections. Treat damaged cuticles with an antibacterial cream. Healthy cuticles produce healthy nails.

While acetone is a common chemical for nail polish removers, you may want to avoid using it on your natural nails. Both acetone and formaldehyde can dry out nails and make them brittle.
