Happy new year! :)
Early elective delivery may pose health risks for mothers, infants.
For infants, being born via early elective delivery, it was associated with complications including breathing difficulties, feeding problems and cerebral palsy, U.S. researchers reported in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Women undergoing early elective delivery face a higher risk of needing a cesarean delivery and having long-term surgical complications. Just another argument for letting nature alone to do what it does best :).
Things that make you go hmmm.....Infants exposed to antiepileptic drugs through their mothers' breast milk had higher IQ and Verbal Index scores at age 6 than those who were not breast-fed, according to a study presented at the American Epilepsy Society meeting. Breast-fed babies also fared a little better than their counterparts in nonverbal, memory and executive functioning, but the differences were not statistically significant according to researchers.
Merry Christmas, and to all a good night :) !!
Despite recent studies that linked selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor use during pregnancy to autism, Danish researchers found no clear link between children exposed to the antidepressants while in the womb and the risk of developing autism. However, researchers did find a potential association between a mother's preexisting mental health issues and a child's autism risk. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, was based on records for more than 600,000 children born in Denmark.
Still not too late for that flu shot!!
CDC: Influenza activity continues to increase in U.S.. Between Sept. 29 and Dec. 7, 6.8% of 61,261 samples tested for flu viruses were positive, mostly for strains of influenza A. Positive test results were reported in 48 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico...that includes Florida.
Remember it takes about 20-30 days for the flu shot to be fully protective, and the peak of the flu season is through to April.
Can't we all just relax?
In an analysis of data involving 6,019 adults in the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers found that those with the highest anxiety levels were 33% more likely to suffer a stroke than those with the lowest. Each standard deviation increase in anxiety was linked with a 17% greater likelihood of stroke after accounting for demographic factors, according to the study in the journal Stroke.
A study in JAMA Ophthalmology revealed almost 3 in 5 diabetes patients at risk of vision loss did not remember being counseled by their doctors about the link between the conditions. Researchers also found about 2 out of 5 patients did not get a complete eye exam with dilated pupils in the past year, while a third reported suffering from diabetes-related vision loss. Clearly we have to do a better job educating people who have diabetes about the eye complications.
