November is Family Literacy Month! Maria is a student who has been coming to us for 2 months now. She joined in order to learn English and help her daughters in school. She says children can only understand so much on their own and their teachers can only provide so much information, it is up to us to fill in the gap at home. Maria says her daughters genuinely enjoy school and learning. She has them read to her and explain in Spanish what the story was about. Her goal is to be able to communicate enough to help her girls study. We will continue to help Maria achieve this goal for a better future for herself and her girls.

November is National Family Literacy Month and is an opportunity for families to learn and read together. It also celebrates the work literacy programs do to empower families.

Happy Friday everyone and good morning!

This is Maria and her daughter Rachel. Coming to the learning center has helped Maria communicate, read, write, and speak English. Maria paints for a living and says her co workers all speak English. Having conversations in English has helped her a lot with vocabulary and pronunciation. She says while at work she doesn't have a choice but to speak English but she is grateful that she has to use it everyday since it helps her practice.

Maria's main goal is to get her high school diploma so she may get into a nursing program to become a nurse. Maria enjoys reading and helping Rachel with her homework. Rachel is 12 years old and she helps her mom by having more conversations in English to help her. Maria is very dedicated to learning that she takes time to read out loud during her lunch breaks at work. Everything counts she says! We look forward to continuing to help Maria accomplish her goals and we are very proud of her. Great job Maria!

Good Morning! Post #3 for Adult Education and Family Literacy Week!

Everyone this is Kenia and her daughter Kathryn. Kenia has been coming to LTR for about a year now. She has been coming to the learning center and working on the computers consistently. Since her time with us she has been able to understand more in her day to day activities such as going to the grocery store or simply having conversations in English with others.

Kenia enjoys roleplaying with her daughter and helping her to read and understand words in books. Kenia knows and understands that she herself is still learning but that its never pointless to try and help her young daughter know and understand the importance of education. Reading together is one way she helps herself and Kathryn learn how words are said and how to put them together. Kenia says the best part of reading together is feeling the connection of learning together and that they are not alone but together in their journey to improving their literacy skills. That is an amazing way to look at reading with your children. Great job Kenia!

Good afternoon everyone! Post #2 for Adult Education and Family Literacy Week!

We love showing the happy connections we have made with our students and their tutors. Gayle Pike and Ann Rogak lead this group of 3 young women on a journey to improving their English. They meet every week on Tuesdays at a local library to study and practice their English speaking skills. Evelin (in red) has accomplished her goal of getting employment as a teachers assistant with her first resume she has ever created! We congratulate Evelin a job well done and we wish her the best of luck!

Good afternoon everyone! Today is the first day of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week

This is Evelin and her daughter Sophia getting ready to read together before dinner time. Evelin is from Honduras and came to the United States to give her daughter a safer place to live and grow. She has attended The National Autonomous University of Honduras and wants to continue her education here in the States. Learning English is the first step she says. She sought our help back in May to help her improve her English. She wants to help educate Sophia by helping her with school. She is currently in VPK but will start school soon. Reading to her is one of her favorite things to do. She says she is able to connect more on a deeper level with her and help her to better understand what she is reading.

In addition to Evelin learning English, she has created her own resume on her own. It was her first one she ever made. She was not aware of what a resume was however, once explaining it to her she decided she needed one in order to apply for better employment opportunities. She hopes to work with children as a teachers assistant someday.
