A fresh hand poke piece 🌿 next to some old machine pieces 🕊️🌸 I did during my apprenticeship!

This is a good visual to see how the different styles compare to each other. My style of hand poke tends to look a lot more flowy and organic whereas my machine work has more precision and smoother blends. Neither is better than the other, it’s purely up to what you prefer aesthetically and physically (tattooing experience).

A little clarification: hand poke is a technique, not a style. Hand poke describes the method of depositing ink into the skin. The style of hand poke can vary as much as machine tattoos, from fine line to traditional! I do fine line hand poke, just like I do fine line machine work. ☺️

Some feedback I received on how hand poke feels vs. a machine:

- I barely felt it!
- It feels like a regular machine tattoo, just slower.
- It’s relaxing and meditative ~

I’ve practiced on myself as well and have found that it is much less painful than a machine! So I think hand poke is a great option for those that are more sensitive to pain.
