This is long, but might be worth a read.
I have to admit, in the past I've watched natural disasters unfold & part of me always wandered why people needed to be rescued. I'd question why they didn't get out earlier, why did it get to a point they had to get on their roof, etc? There was plenty of warning for them to evacuate before it got so bad why didn't they do it sooner? Well, now I'm one of those I used to stand & pass judgement on. My husband & I both didn't even know about this storm until late Wednesday evening. According to all the news outlets it wasn't expected to hit Houston other than the outer bands of rain. So we didn't think there was any need to evacuate or anything. Yes, we did everything we could to be prepared. We had our "go bags" ready just in case, we propped things up in case it got a little water in the house & we kept an eye out. We never thought we'd have to worry about major flooding since it has zero record of flooding (at least as far back as 1960's). Surely if it didn't flood during Allison we should be safe right?
Man, one minute we were telling family our street wasn't even flooded, we had power, so if they need a place to stay, our house was open. Within thirty minutes, we had water coming in all sides of our house & within an hour it was ankle deep & just kept rising. We even thought, it could recede, many other people had water get high but it receded when the rain died down some. Well, when the rain died, the water kept rising. We had heard not to contact emergency services unless it was a "true emergency" so we kept waiting. Yeah, water was getting up to our waist but we were still able to find dry areas to put the kids but the water wasn't letting up so we finally called for rescue. We went to the SUV in the driveway & got inside while we waited, ended up getting one of our neighbors to come wait with us who was elderly & tried waiting it out as well. He's lived there 45+ years and has never seen it like this. It's heart breaking to think everything is under water right now. It wouldn't have mattered how we prepared, we would not have been able to prevent anything with this.

When your kid forgets their lunch & you tell them to buy their lunch at school. Am I the only parent that doesn't turn around & bring them their lunch???

I will never forget how sad and devastating it was looking at the site where the World Trade Centers used to stand & how everyone stood & cried on each other's shoulders. Justice will be served. America Strong!!! We will never forget!!!
