We are joining the fight against lupus and breast cancer by increasing awareness in the community.

The Black Butterfly Foundation was founded on January 29, 2015 by a family affected with lupus since the early 1950's. đź’śMental Health & Lupus (SLE) in the African American Communityđź’ś
African American individuals—especially women—experience Lupus (SLE) at higher rates and with more severe symptoms. This increased disease burden is closely linked to higher levels of depression, anxiety, and emotional distress.

These mental health challenges are intensified by factors such as systemic inequities in healthcare, racism‑related stress, limited social support, and barriers to effective communication with providers. Despite this elevated risk, African American patients with SLE are less likely to receive a diagnosis or treatment for depression, leaving many without needed support.
Raising awareness of these disparities is essential to improving access to culturally responsive care, strengthening mental health resources, and ensuring equitable outcomes for those living with Lupus.

đź’śđź’śThis Mattersđź’śđź’ś
Lupus is not only a physical disease—it affects the whole person. Mental health challenges can worsen disease activity, reduce quality of life, and create barriers to consistent care. Addressing these disparities requires:
• Culturally responsive healthcare
• Improved communication and trust between patients and providers
• Greater access to mental health resources
• Community education and advocacy
• Policies that address social determinants of health
Raising awareness is a critical step toward ensuring African American women living with lupus receive equitable, compassionate, and comprehensive care—physically, emotionally, and socially.

By sharing this information, we help raise awareness, encourage early intervention, and advocate for more equitable care for those living with Lupus. Let’s continue to uplift, educate, and support our community. 💜
