This week the FCC took a concrete step against illegal robocalls, and it starts further upstream than call blocking: who gets phone numbers in the first place.

Chairman Carr proposed national-security certifications and tighter review before a provider can receive numbers. For the schools, businesses, and local governments we serve, that means fewer legitimate calls labeled "Spam Likely," fewer missed messages, and less fraud pressure.

Nicky Smith explains how numbers are assigned, where bad actors get in, the school whose weather-closure calls were getting flagged, and six checks you can run on your own provider today. Video included.

Moving phones at more than one office is not a device swap. It is a change to how every location answers, transfers, and recovers calls. Our new seven-step guide covers the three things that decide whether a multi-site migration goes well: a written call-flow map, number porting run as its own project, and a validated 911 location for every phone and app. Read it, then call us if you have more than one site to move. A customer texts your office at 7:15 a.m. asking if the technician is on the way. If that text lands on one employee's personal phone, the answer depends on whether that person is awake, working, or still employed. Our new guide draws the line between business texting and personal texting, shows why a shared inbox on the number customers already call fixes it, and gives you a one-page policy. (336) 544-4000

A 911 call from Room 214 should not leave a dispatcher guessing which building, floor, or entrance responders need.

A campus is not one address. It is a district office, an elementary school, a field house, portables, and a maintenance shop. A phone system that reports every call from the main street address can send the ambulance to the wrong door.

Here is why schools need E911 in every building, what Kari's Law and RAY BAUM'S Act actually require, and the one job that keeps the location data accurate after installation day.

An ice storm takes out the power on a Friday night. Your old phone system in the back room goes quiet with the lights.

Your customers do not know that. They call, hear nothing, and call someone else.

With a hosted phone system, the phone system is not in your building. Your number stays live, and calls ring the app on your cellphone, another location, or a storm greeting you recorded on a calm afternoon.

Our new guide covers what fails first when the power goes out, what to protect in the office, and a fifteen-minute drill to make sure your plan works before you need it.

We pulled a recording for a customer's billing dispute and found it in a minute. We also found three years of every call the company had ever taken, open to anyone with the shared office password.

Nobody had done anything wrong on purpose. They turned the feature on and never wrote the rules.

Here is the call recording policy guide we wish they had read first: consent and notice, who can listen, how long to keep recordings, and how to make the phone system enforce it.

Which area code should your business use? In the Triad, it is 336 or 743, and the two are the same in every way except age. In the mountains, it is 828 today, with a new 451 overlay approved for 2028. Our new guide lists all ten North Carolina area codes, explains why your neighbor's number may start with a different code than yours, and walks through six steps for choosing, keeping, and publishing a local number customers will answer. A dental office called us because referrals were going missing. The fax machine worked fine. It sat in a back hallway; the person who used to check it had changed jobs, and three weeks of specialist referrals were sitting in the output tray.

Nothing failed. Nobody owned it.

That is the real fax problem in most small offices, and it is not a technology problem. Here is how to choose an online fax service that fixes the ownership first.

An insurance agency asked us to put an AI receptionist on their main line. Their receptionist was excellent and overwhelmed.

We did not replace her. We put the AI in front of her. It handles hours, directions, and "which agent has my policy." Claims and anything with a worried voice go straight to her, with the caller's name already captured.

Her call count dropped by a third. The calls she takes now are the ones that needed her.

AI vs live receptionist is not either-or. Here is how to sort your calls.

A phone that survives the job site. The new Yealink AX86R is rated IP67 against dust and water, shrugs off a 1.8 meter drop, and runs 13 hours of talk time on a charge. Wi-Fi 6 roaming keeps the call up as you walk the site, and the housing is antibacterial and chemical resistant, so it works in a clinic or a kitchen as well as a warehouse.
