That “baking soda removes 99% of pesticides” claim is the kind of thing that makes you want to dump a whole box in the sink. But the science is way more specific than the meme makes it sound.
The most-cited study used a 1% baking soda solution on apples and found it could remove a lot of certain surface pesticides, especially with a long soak around 12 to 15 minutes. Key detail: it did not fully remove chemicals that had already moved below the peel, and results vary by pesticide and produce type.
If you want a practical, low-drama routine, do this: rinse under running water, rub or gently scrub, then dry with a clean towel. Save the baking soda soak for thicker-skinned produce when you have time and want an extra step, not because you’re scared of your grocery bill turning into a health risk.
