In the late 1800s, ethnic haircare practices were systematically undermined and stolen as European beauty standards were imposed on communities of African descent. During this period, natural Black hairstyles were often deemed inappropriate, leading to the stigmatization of wearing hair in its natural state. The widespread adoption of Eurocentric beauty ideals resulted in a loss of traditional knowledge about how to properly care for and manage ethnic hair. This cultural shift created a gap in understanding and embracing the beauty and versatility of natural hair, forcing generations to conform to foreign standards that often disregarded the unique characteristics of textured hair.

Here are key steps to help you find your niche:
1. Assess Your Strengths and Passions: Identify what you’re good at and what excites you. Reflect on skills, talents, and subjects you enjoy, as this will fuel long-term motivation.
2. Research Market Gaps: Study the industry to uncover unmet needs or problems that align with your interests and expertise. Look at what competitors are offering and where there’s room for innovation.
3. Identify Your Target Audience: Understand who would benefit most from your specialized services or products. Focus on a specific demographic, profession, or interest group that aligns with your niche.
4. Experiment and Get Feedback: Test your ideas by offering products or services on a small scale. Use customer feedback to refine and determine what resonates most with your audience.
5. Evaluate Profitability: Ensure that there is demand for your niche and that it can generate sustainable income. Consider scalability and long-term potential.
6. Stay Flexible and Evolve: As industries change, so should your niche. Stay open to adjusting your focus based on trends, feedback, and personal growth.
By combining these steps, you can carve out a unique, fulfilling space within your chosen field.

When I entered the I had one goal, to teach people like me how to care for their hair. During countless consultations with clients sharing their hair concerns, I was encouraged to share with them tips and suggestions for how they can improve their hair care routine while in salon and at home. I have trained with pioneers in this industry to ensure that the knowledge I was giving was rooted in and could actually yield substantial results. is still my most valuable tool as I am exploring the path of education in this industry.

Learn About Kwanzaa!
—
This is my inaugural year celebrating Kwanzaa and I have learned that during this time we greet each other by saying “Habari Gani” (hah – BAR – ee GAH – nee). It is a Swahili term meaning “What is the news?” It is spoken when greeting others during Kwanzaa. The appropriate response is to say the name of the principle for that day. Each day of Kwanzaa centers around a principle.
