This client came to me for a refresh two years after we covered an old microblading with a gray-green undertone. Working with cover-ups is always more complex than working on untouched skin — and this doesn’t show only on the day of the procedure. It often shows years later, when a client comes in for a refresh.
A well-done permanent makeup should fade gradually and leave the skin, rather than change color over time. Why does this happen?
Because brown pigment is made up of red, black, and yellow particles — and they leave the skin at different rates. Warmer particles fade faster than cooler ones, which means that over time, permanent makeup or tattoos can start to look cooler or ashy if pigment remains in the skin too long.
The goal of a proper procedure is for the color to fade before it shifts in tone — or to leave only a very soft residual color that can be easily corrected during a refresh.
With cover-ups, however, we’re working on skin that already holds pigment — often placed too deep. That old pigment may change color, but it doesn’t fully leave the skin, because deeper layers tend to retain pigment much longer, sometimes permanently.
So when a client returns for a refresh years later, my pigment has done exactly what it was meant to do — it has faded.
The old pigment, however, is still present, and its unwanted undertone can become visible again.
