English:Natural and Lifestyle Medicine for Covid Treatment
Cimone Kamei, DAc
Jujube Clinic Honolulu, HI

It has been almost two years since the start of the novel coronavirus (hereinafter referred to as Covid) pandemic, and the world is still in search of a viable form of treatment. In 2021, the Delta strain caused a major concern for medical care shortage, and we are still left uncertain about the future.

A recent study has shown that the rate of Covid reinfection called a breakthrough case is high in areas where the vaccination rate is high. Based on the results of a large-scale global study, this paper〔*1〕suggests that the current approach of prioritizing vaccines should be reconsidered, and the need for preventive measures including a healthy lifestyle should be taken into account.

Since the start of the pandemic, we have been taking care of Covid patients from all over the world
by adding Oriental medicine to what ever treatment the patient was on when they reached out for help. We at Jujube Clinic have harmonized natural medicine and Western medicine in order to treat patients from Hawaii, Japan, and many parts of the world. For patients who tested positive for Covid, we provide them instructions remotely. As a result, we have seen great results by recommending what we call "natural medicine" and "lifestyle medicine", even without direct treatment.

Based on this encouraging clinical experience, I will discuss the details of natural and lifestyle medicine that will assist you in maintaining a healthy mind and body during these critical times.

Healing Through Kanpo Herbal Medicine
While the world is searching for new medicines to treat Covid symptoms, the most effective medicines are undoubtedly already here with us. Natural medicines such as Kanpo (traditional Chinese herbal medicine) and other herbs and enzymes, with help of essential oils, can help regulate and boost the immune system.

Natural medicine may be considered “unscientific” in Western medicine, which could not be further from the truth. In fact, much of modern pharmaceuticals have been derived from natural ingredients. We prefer the idea of taking strong drugs that "defeat germs and viruses”, but in reality the body heals itself by activating natural immunity, during which it harmonizes and neutralizes the foreign virus. Natural medicines can tap into the body’s natural immunity. Many published papers have so far demonstrated their effectiveness as treatment against Covid〔*2〕.

Kanpo has been effective in treating respiratory symptoms caused not only by Covid, but influenza and chronic asthma〔*3〕. An important aspect of Kanpo is that it works on the immune system rather than acting directly on bacteria and viruses, as they encourage the body's core function to promote healing and alleviate symptoms〔*4〕.

For example, a Kanpo called Seihai-Haidoku-Tō (Qingfei Paidu Tang in Chinese) is undergoing the first round of FDA clinical trials as a treatment for Covid. These Kanpo medicines have also shown a synergistic effect with Western medical treatments〔*5〕.

Kakkon-Tō・Maō-Tō・Seihai-Tō Herbal Remedy

At our clinic, we recommend three kinds of medicines that can be purchased at pharmacies: Kakkon-Tō〔*6〕, Maō-Tō〔*7〕, and Seihai-Tō〔*8〕.

Kanpo is attracting renewed attention as a Covid treatment〔*9〕, and they are easy to purchase. Our patients have been using them for home treatment since the beginning of the pandemic, and have confirmed their effectiveness. As stated above, many of these herbal medicines work in synergy with Western medical treatments〔*10〕.

There are a variety of Covid patients from mild symptoms, those waiting for treatment, at home care under the direction of doctors, recuperating at home while receiving outpatient treatment at the hospital, or those receiving oxygen therapy at home after being discharged. In many cases, they are taking the medication recommended by the hospital, while others are recovering after being discharged from the hospital, including those in isolation.

In one case, I examined a hospitalized patient who had moderate to severe symptoms, in collaboration with his physician. The patient had not improved with the hospital treatment and was on the verge of being put on a ventilator the next day. At his request, we prescribed Kanpo herbal medicine and other natural medicines, and his blood oxygen level steadily improved to the point of avoiding the ventilator.

Recently, we have treated several patients who tested positive for Covid and developed symptoms despite being vaccinated. One patient had a strong adverse reaction to the vaccine, improved after treatment at our clinic, then tested positive and became ill, which we had to treat again.

I would like to reiterate that Kanpo and traditional medicines can be obtained and used safely. Whether being treated by prescribed medicine or not, vaccinated or unvaccinated, it is absolutely essential to activate and enhance your natural immunity in order for any treatment to work.

Seihai-Haidoku-Tō (Qingfei Paidu Tang)

I mentioned above that Seihai-Haidoku-Tō is now undergoing clinical trials as a "COVID-19 herbal formula" to be used as a US FDA-regulated drug.

This herbal medicine was newly formulated in 2020 by combining five different oriental herbal formulas (twenty-one different herbal ingredients) in response to Covid. It has been confirmed that the combined effect of the traditional herbs has saved many patients〔*11〕.

Since there is presently a lot of attention paid to this formula, some cases used Seihai-Haidoku-Tō alone from the initial onset of symptoms, in anticipation of its effectiveness. Since Seihai-Haidoku-Tō combines various herbal medicines into one, it is already considered a potent medicine. However, in Oriental medicine, strong medicine does not necessarily mean it is good or effective, rather something gentle to the body according to its condition is preferable. Traditional medicines such as Kakkon-Tō, Maō-Tō, and Seihai-Tō are the safest, and their medical effectiveness has been proven historically.

For this reason, we use three kinds of medication at our clinic depending on the symptom; Kakkon-Tō as the first step, Maō-Tō as the second step, Seihai-Tō as the third step, and Seihai-Haidoku-Tō is recommended only when the fourth step is necessary.

How to Use Kanpo Herbal Medicine

For home treatment, it is important to first consult with your health care provider. Then prepare servings of Kakkon-Tō, Maō-Tō, Seihai-Tō. There are different types of these herbs: decoctions, which are taken by boiling the ingredients, and granule, capsule and tablet types.
Here we recommend the granule or capsule / tablet type, which are easy to buy and ready to use. The dosage is indicated in the instructions, but for the granule type, dissolve 2-3 grams at a time in hot water and drink it as a herbal tea, and for the capsule or tablet type, take a few capsule/tablets with water.

In addition, a regular use of a blood oxygen analyzer, which measures blood oxygen level on your fingertips, along with a thermometer, will help you monitor your progress.Blood oxygen level refers to the amount of oxygen contained in arterial blood. In normal conditions, it is 94-95% or higher, but it will drop when breathing is not smooth, and sufficient oxygen cannot be taken in through the alveoli. As a result, if the organs throughout the body are not getting enough oxygen, the situation can be critical.

Herbal medicines are used according to symptoms, as described below (not to be mixed and taken at the same time).

(1) Kakkon-Tō
Stage 1: Onset to early stages of recognizable symptoms.
Kakkon-Tō is generally used as cold remedy for runny nose, sore throat, and chills. If symptoms disappear, treatment is done at this stage.

(2) Maō-Tō
Second 2: middle stages experiencing fever.
If symptoms progress to a fever, switch to Maō-Tō. It is used for the middle stage when chills and fever starts, but sweating is not frequent. After Maō-Tō treatment, sweating will occur and symptoms will generally improve. As you experience sweat, you should change clothes often.

(3) Seihai-Tō
Stage 3: late stage - cough, phlegm, pneumonia. When you start to cough and tangle phlegm, and feel discomfort in the bronchial tubes and lungs, or develop pneumonia. This is third or later stage, in this case Seihai-Tō is the choice.

Above is a step-by-step guide to using Kanpo, but some people may start taking it at the middle or later stages of symptoms, so first figure out which stage you are in, then choose the right one to start using.

In Oriental medicine, symptoms and fever are rather normal and considered an important function of the body's natural immunity. The body will possess naturally acquired immunity, and an array of immune responses, including antibodies to prevent further infection.
Kanpo should not be used as suppressor of symptoms, but as natural medicine to assist the immune system and trigger healing, while also building immunity.

Therapeutic Effects of Essential Oils

Essential oils are natural medicine that can be used as a preventive measure on a regular basis, but can also be effective as a treatment.
For example, lavender and peppermint oils have been clinically proven to increase blood oxygen levels, which can help you breathe easier〔*12〕. Essential oils have also been shown to possess antiviral effects, just like Kanpo medicine〔*13〕.

How to Use Essential Oils

To use the oil, rub a few drops on your chest, neck and back of the neck. You can also put the oil on the inside of your wrist, rub them together, then bring them up to your nose and inhale deeply several times with abdominal breathing, as many times as you need to throughout the day. Alternatively, a diffuser that disperses the oil molecules into the air of the room can also be effective.

 Practicing Lifestyle Medicine

As much as we recommend natural medicine, it is crucial to improve one's lifestyle starting with diet, and practice a lifestyle that promotes enhanced immunity〔*14〕.
Improvement of lifestyle in addition to herbal and natural medicine is expected to promote immune function and have a synergistic effect. In the future, it will be more common to combine the most advanced Western medical treatments with lifestyle medicine.

Blood Condition and Onset of Disease

Lifestyle medicine is a simple lifestyle that can be practiced easily to correct fundamental health. Although it has not been the focus on news reports, it is clear that the degree of symptoms caused by the covid is directly correlated to an individual's underlying health conditions.

While there have been many deaths attributed to the Covid, we cannot also ignore the fact that there are many cases of asymptomatic or mild illnesses. What has emerged from the large-scale statistics is that health is related to the condition of their intestine and blood, and a patient should never be judged by exterior observation alone. The consideration of gut and blood status as a barometer of health is a concept based on Oriental medicine, but it is gaining attention in Western medicine as well with the current pandemic.

For example, it has been discovered that cytokine storms (white blood cell outbursts) are caused in part by low levels of "Regulatory T-Cells" produced in the intestines. It has been observed that a decrease in “good bacteria” in the intestines is linked to severe illness. A paper was also published on the relationship between blood condition and the worsening of Covid due to increased blood viscosity, caused by an imbalance in the intestinal microbiota and increased blood fat〔*15〕.

〔*14〕Journal on the effects of lifestyle medicine on covid

〔*15〕Paper on the relationship between blood viscosity and Covid
Blood viscosity of COVID-19 patient: a preliminary report (Abstract of the journal presented by the National Library of Medicine) In addition to Covid, the severity of disease caused by viral infections is overwhelmingly related to obesity, hypertension, heart disease, chronic fatigue, diabetes, cancer, and other underlying diseases, now called co-morbidities in case of death.
Oxidative stress, inflammation, and immune abnormalities have all attracted attention, and studies have proved that the underlying causes are intestinal disorders 〔*16〕〔*17〕〔*18〕, and high-viscosity blood〔*19〕〔*20〕〔*21〕.

Improving the intestinal environment means correcting the intestinal microflora. If the intestinal flora is corrected by diet, the blood is purified, and together with natural medicine such as Kanpo it will activate your immune system from within〔*22).

Since the environment of the bacterial flora in the intestines also affects the viscosity of the blood〔*23〕, improving your gut health is a reasonable way to purify the blood. In other words, regulating the bacteria in the intestines is a fundamental treatment〔*24〕and a reliable practice for maintaining overall good health.

Fermented Foods and Intestinal Microflora

How can we regulate our intestinal bacteria in our daily lives? One of the answers is to replenish your intestinal bacteria by incorporating fermented foods into your daily diet〔*25〕.
Fermented foods include natto (fermented soy beans), Japanese Tsukemono (pickled vegetables), pickles, and sauerkraut, sour poi, miso and many other.

Nukazuke pickles, in particular, are excellent fermented foods that contain diverse types of beneficial bacteria, including lactic acid bacteria, yeast bacteria, and butyric acid bacteria.
Reinforcing intestinal and pulmonary immunity with fermented foods has been found to be effective as a means of fighting the covid〔*26〕 and there is also a link between taking fermented vegetables and lower Covid mortality rates〔*27〕.

Purification of Blood and Acquired Immunity

Most importantly, we need to return to the basic principles of health that has governed our bodies for thousands of years. We need to break free from the modern mentality that “virus is the enemy”, which has led to the search for solutions that "defeat" viruses in order win a battle.

As many researchers have pointed out, virus mutates repeatedly, and it is the natural order for humans to become accustomed to it. We live in a world full of myriad of viruses, bacteria, and other microbial life forms. Viruses and human beings have a symbiotic relationship, and we can overcome the waves of new viruses while also building up our immunity.

The key is to observe natural and acquired immunity. For example, we can catch a cold or flu when our immune system is weak, but our body always overcomes them through natural immunity, and simultaneously train itself to adapt to variants. Through the process of dealing with bacteria and viruses, our body acquires immune response, by producing necessary antibodies and activating the adaptive immune system that includes B cells and T cells.

Recent studies have shown that in the case of Covid, natural immunity will still protect us if we maintain good health〔*28〕. Therefore, in the face of the pandemic it is important for us to reevaluate the power of our natural immunity and be aware that we can proactively overcome any disease.

We need to regulate our intestines by purifying our blood to be less acidic and less coagulant. It has been proven that regulating natural immunity renews acquired immunity, hence preparing the body when exposed to new virus in the environment.

〔*28〕Journal on the naturally acquired immunity to Covid.
Naturally activated adaptive immunity in COVID-19 patients (Abstract of the journal presented by the National Library of Medicine) Cleansing Intestines That Produce Blood

From the very beginning, we at Jujube Clinic have been recommending the purification of the intestines and blood through lifestyle medicine. Improving the intestines leads to blood purification because blood is also produced in the intestines. Traditionally, it is taught that blood is produced solely in the bone marrow, but the phenomenon of blood production in the intestines, called intestinal hematopoiesis has been recognized in recent years.

Dr. Keiichi Morish*ta, a Japanese physician and hematologist, testified about intestinal hematopoiesis to the Japanese Diet in the 1960s. The theory clearly shows that since blood is produced in the intestines using food as source material, a diet centered around animal protein and sugar will disrupt the intestinal environment and lead to coagulated blood.

More than half a century after Dr. Morish*ta's research, many studies related to intestinal hematopoiesis have been published, proving that intestinal microflora maintain hematopoiesis〔*29〕in the intestines, that deterioration of the intestinal bacterial flora interferes with hematopoiesis〔*30〕, and that human intestinal grafts contain functional hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells〔*31〕.

In the theory of intestinal hematopoiesis, blood produced in the intestines is differentiated into somatic cells. For this reason, quality blood is produced from quality food, and since the blood turn into somatic cells, it results in a healthy functioning body.

Morish*ta's theory proposes a mechanism by which digested food transforms into a monella-like substance in the intestine, which then changes into epithelial cells in the intestine, in turn will differentiate into special hematopoietic cells which only exist in the small intestine, called Erythrocyte mother cells. Then the mother cells produce red blood cells, which also differentiate and develop into various cells. In support of this, the phenomenon of "cells changing into different cells under special conditions" has also been reported〔*32〕.

Viruses Replicate Inside the Body

In the Chishima-Morish*ta theory of intestinal hematopoiesis, the resulting somatic cells are discharged from the body through reverse differentiation back into red blood cells, or through degradation and disintegration into virus-like substance. Reverse differentiation is the essence of detoxification, as it is expelled through various pathways such as exhalation, sweat, urination, defecation, and skin exfoliation.

This is supported by recent research such as Cell Reversal Theory (CRT) 〔*33〕, which studies the ability of somatic cells to reverse and revert to stem cells, and research on exosomes (extracellular vesicles), which supports the process of degradation and disintegration of cells into virus-like materials〔*34〕. In addition, it has been reported that the similarities between viruses and exosomes are quite similar and indistinguishable from non-infectious retroviruses〔*35〕.

All of these studies are authoritative, peer-reviewed papers available at the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Origin of the Virus Within

In this paper, I have detailed the relationship between Covid and intestines / blood that modern medicine has begun to follow as a key of maintaining health with Covid. And the theory of intestinal hematopoiesis which goes one step further. Although there are still many theories in virology, the novel coronaviruses emerge or increase from the cytoplasm inside the cell, which is rich in RNA.

Scientific evidence points to the fact that the viruses detected in our body are mostly made up of our own cellular proteins; which is part of yourself. In other words, the hypothetical enemy (the virus) is a part of your own cells and the Western notion of identifying the virus as a pathogen and battling with it will not work forever.

We need to break away from the current approach of battling with the nature and instead, learn to harmonize with it through optimal health and immunity by preparing ourselves to go back to the basics of life.
Improve our diet and eat fermented foods to purify the intestines and blood. Further, have the right mindset to utilize natural medicines such as Kanpo and other herbal and natural remedies, integrated with western medicine. In addition, practice of proper hydration〔*36〕, Vitamin D from the sunlight〔*37〕, Earthing〔*38〕and many other lifestyle medicine could be added.
Many study suggest that by improving the standard of mindset and health, we can control the origin of the virus within us by inhibiting its replication, even if it enters our body as external pathogen. With this notion, we can correct the burden surrounding the COVID disaster and move forward toward the path to end this pandemic.
