A phrase I encountered during my recent visit to ‘Iolani Palace

* Unwavering
* Unshakable
* Steadfast
* Standing firm in one’s convictions
* Patient and resilient in the face of adversity

I also learned that this phrase is famous as the motto of Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last queen of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

“The strength to keep moving forward with conviction and love, even in the face of adversity.”

This word resonated deeply with me. I felt this word in harmony with the spirit of lomilomi—that unwavering conviction and spirit itself—which I hold so dear.

It has become a phrase that I, too, want to cherish.

また、ハワイ王国最後の女王である Queen Liliʻuokalani のモットーとしても有名な言葉と知りました。

「困難があっても信念や愛を持って前進し続ける強さ」

この言葉は私の心に深く響きました。それは私が大切にしているロミロミの精神―揺るぎない信念や精神そのもの―と通じているように感じられました。

私にとっても、大切にしていきたいと思う言葉となりました。

I wonder how many times I’ve visited ‘Iolani Palace by now. While many people might name the beach as their favorite place in Hawaii, for some reason I’ve always loved ‘Iolani Palace.

Every time I visit, I learn something new and experience different emotions, but I was able to learn about the turbulent Hawaiian Kingdom in the late 19th century —when King Kalākaua and Queen Lili’uokalani lived—along with the history of ‘Iolani Palace again. I realized once again just how much I like this place, where I can connect with and feel Hawaii’s history.

今までにも何度もイオラニ宮殿を訪れたことがありますが、ハワイで一番好きな場所といえば、多くの人がビーチを挙げるかもしれませんが、なぜか私は前々からイオラニ宮殿が好きでした。

訪れる度に新しい学びがあり、さまざまな感情を味わいますが、今回もカラカウア王やリリウオカラニ女王らが生きた、19世紀後半の激動のハワイ王国について、イオラニ宮殿の歴史とともに、改めて学ぶことができました。ハワイの歴史に触れ、その息吹を感じることができるこの空間は、やっぱり好きだなと実感しました。
