If you’re spending 45 minutes (and $35) on a manicure, shouldn’t you give it a fighting chance at survival?

Read below for a plan to keep your nails looking better, longer.

What You Need: Rubber gloves.

What You Do: Any time you’re washing dishes, scrubbing your bathtub or doing anything else that requires submerging your hands in hot water, wear the gloves.

Why It Works: Hot water erodes both the top and base layers of your manicure—quite obviously for regular polish but also for gels and acrylics—leading to more chips and an overall shorter lifespan. Rubber gloves protect your nails and, well, you get the idea.

Any Other Benefits? Hot water also dries your hands, so dishwashing gloves are extra useful for folks prone to dry skin, especially in winter months.

If you're obsessed with your nails, then you know there’s nothing as satisfying as walking out of a salon with a fresh acrylic set. But after a few weeks with those glamorous nails, you also know what’s coming: the dreaded and tedious acrylic nail removal process.

It is important to remove acrylics in a proper way by soaking, versus breaking them off your self and tearing them away from your natural nail, which in turn can damage your nails.

When you choose to tear off the acrylics from the natural nail you are tearing extra layers off the nail, or onyx, [which is] the technical term for the nail. The more layers that are removed, the more the nails are damaged.

It’s always best to have acrylics removed professionally by your nail tech.

Apply moisturizer. Use lotions, moisturizing oils, or store bought moisturizers specifically made for cuticles to moisturize the dry areas around your nails. Rub a generous amount of moisturizer on the nail, and pay special attention to your cuticles. The entire area surrounding your nail should be coated with the moisturizer.
* You can also try applying moisturizer underneath your nails as well.
* Alcohol and fragrance free moisturizers usually hydrate skin better.

Moisturize often. For smoother, hydrated skin around your nails, moisturize everyday, multiple times a day. You always want your cuticles and nails to be hydrated, because hangnails, rips, and breaks happen when your nails and cuticles are dry.
* Keeping your hands moisturized is especially important in the dry, winter months.
