Feeling better than I did when I wrote this, but sharing so it can be medicine for someone else
This poem is probably unfinished. I wrote it after realizing I was being harsh with myself about something | did, even though the other person forgave me. I started saying affirmations to forgive myself and they brought tears to my eyes.
I’m reparenting myself each day, and sometimes my heart breaks open at how different my healing work is from what I was taught.
We were taught survival skills, how to make ways out no way, how to navigate a cruel system. There’s medicine there so I don’t throw them out entirely.
But some of those practices we were taught - don’t talk about certain things, don’t cry, don’t burden others with your emotions, each and every mistake/
misunderstanding/misinterpretation is an opportunity to be punished so be perfect if you want to be safe—those need to be returned to the soil so they can be broken down and transmuted into nourishing veggies and herbs next season.
This is a poem about my process of composting some of those survival skills I was taught, opening myself up to softer ways of being, and remembering that my family needs the same medicine.

Curious about herbalism and looking for more natural ways to support your wellness? In need of communal space to share your love of music and vibe out? This isn’t your ordinary herbalism workshop. We invite you to gather with us and be a part of a collective BIPOC restoration space and hands-on workshop facilitated by wellness practitioner and herbalist Raquel Douglas—founder of Rocky’s Root Care. After tending to an altar for our feminist ancestors/leaders, we will collectively explore ways to connect to plants based on our ancestral traditions, active listening, and creative urges. We will learn about specific herbs that support mental health and leave with herbs to journey with. Come for the knowledge and herbal tea, stay for the communal wisdom, free food, and collective music-making session at the end. Bring offerings for the altar, instruments, and your favorite stories/memories related to plants.

Feeling held in community and full of sweet emotions. Y’all have really showed up and showed out these past couple days. But it’s not even about the money or sales. Someone who I met in passing once before gave me the beautiful bouquet that made my table even more beautiful. And gifted me the most beautiful textured sunflower painting ever. A total stranger, but someone I’m clearly connected to through the roots
I appreciate the sales so so so very much AND also—this work isn’t just about the money. I love helping people clear their eczema and feel more confident in their skin. I love hearing how my tea blends help people sleep better, reduce substance use, and calm their monkey brain (I should drink my own tea more haha). I love hugging new people after laughing together. I love exchanging gifts and those little moments of connection and story-sharing that linger on the brain. I love dropping surprise freebies in people’s bags that I know they’ll cherish later.
I love way our roots get tangled up with each other, for a moment, at these markets as we share knowledge, histories, and creations. Special shout out to and for making today extra special!
PVD markets have been good to me. Not sure when my next one will be, but I know it’ll be just as amazing.
