With winter here bees are out trying to survive and collecting any last bit of pollen before the freezes set in. Here are some tips to help our wild pollenators make it this year.
For Wild Bees (Solitary & Bumblebees)
•Provide natural shelters like leaf litter and hollow stems for wild bees. Don't clear garden debris; leaves and dead flower stalks provide vital nesting and insulation. Use hollow canes, old wood, and dense vegetation for natural windbreaks and nesting sites.
•Protect Bare Soil: Many species nest underground; avoid tilling or digging in these areas.
•Planting native winter-blooming flowers try avoiding pesticides year-round
•Provide shallow dishes with pebbles in them with water supply
(Hives and Managed Keeps)
• For honeybees, ensure hives have insulation (foam/wraps) and ventilation (upper/lower entrances) to manage moisture, keep them fed with stored honey/sugar, and protect hives from wind.
•Provide Food: Ensure hives have 80-100 lbs of honey, or supplement with sugar cakes/fondant on top of the cluster so they can access food without breaking the cluster.
•Block Wind: Use natural windbreaks or hive wraps to shield hives from harsh winter winds.
•Leave Enough Honey: Don't harvest all the honey; they need it to generate heat by vibrating their wings.
