Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the clients I’ve had this year and all the years of my career.

I wish I could have a picture of every single one of you in this post, or have enough time to thank all of you individually… just know that whether I only cut your hair once, or I see you every eight weeks, I love you, I’m thankful for you, and you are a total hottie.

With love and joy, your favorite hairstylist, Mel.

Trust me you don't want a 3-layer-haircut.

I mean, I love cake just as much as the next girl, and a three-layer cake sounds ahhhmazing it’s great to eat, but not a great point of inspiration for a cut.

Cake is static, while hair moves fluidly, which is what a trained hairstylist knows when adding layers or texture to your cut.
So, while some of you might want a choppy cut with no movement that’s often the exception not the rule. You want your best accessory to be just that, a part of your look, not the entirety of your personality-which is exactly what a ‘three-layer’ haircut would be.

Or at least that’s all anyone will be able to talk about whenever you leave the room.

Want to know the most important part of your hair experience?

The Consultation.

Imagine going to the doctor and he says "same as last time?" You wouldn't be his patient for long. During the consultation is the time to tell me all the things.

How has your hair been feeling?

How did you like your hair last time?

How have you been styling it lately?

What is today's goal?

Any concerns or question?

Are the products you are using performing the way you want?

Listening and making you feel amazing is the best and it's why I became a stylist to make my guests feel fresh, confident, and able to style their hair at home.

Is your blonde NEVER bright enough?

Hair color is much like life, in that you can't really feel the highs of success at work and love unless you've been broke and dumped. Meaning your hair needs some lows to appreciate the highs.

It might sound scary, but 'lowlights' might be your best friend because your blonde is so solid it's become flat therefore you can't see bright 'hi-lighted' pieces.

First off 'lowlights' don't mean jet black! Yes, you will see the depth of your natural hair when it's highlighted, but keeping with your roots is a good thing.

When you come to a color specialist (like me) then different tones of blonde that not only match your skin tone, but the product is vegan thus keeping your tresses and the Earth around you healthy. Giving your color dimension not only keeps you looking fresh, but you'll stand out in the crowd for all the right reasons (I mean how many blondes are there in Texas-be your own kind of blonde).

See you soon, love!

You know what gift I would love more than any, and it won’t cost you a dime… Leaving a review!

It’s easy to do by going on Yelp, or Google, and searching House Of Color, or Mel Algood, Houston Hairstylist, and leaving me a review.

When you leave me a review let other future and prospective guests know just how awesome I am, and also what kind of experience they can expect when they come for a visit.

If you send me a screenshot of the review that you left on Google or Yelp, then I would be more than happy to take $10 off your next service with me. Or the very least give you an extra long scalp massage. 💆

Thanks in advance, and hope that you are surrounded by those you love today.

You might think that you just don’t have time to get your hair done, or that it’s a waste of money. But in all actuality, taking care of yourself is the most important thing you’ll ever do.

If you don’t take care of yourself, and truly love yourself, for who you are, then it’s much more difficult to love someone else, or to even find value in yourself as a person. And the most beautiful thing about everyone is that there’s something about us that is unique and us inherently beautiful. So yes, you have value even if you don’t see it in yourself.

I do work in an industry that is technically all about beauty, but beauty comes from the inside, and I will always strive to make sure that you feel not only fresh, but confident, and yes, of course beautiful when you leave the chair.

Three reasons why a 'trim' costs as much as a haircut:

1. I charge an hourly rate, so it doesn't matter how much hair I'm taking off. It only depends on how much time it takes for the service, which generally means the longer your tresses are, the longer it takes.

2. Whether I'm taking off fifteen inches, or a millimeter, you're paying for my professional opinion, education, tools, and the overall experience of having a haircut with me rather than the final product. Although the final product will look amazing because of all the continued education I receive, my pristine tools, and the tips I give you to style your hair at home.

3. Being a hairstylist not only means you're an artist, but you have a trade. Like any tradesperson, a hairstylist deserves to earn a living with their skills and education, as does an electrician, plumber, or auto mechanic. Yet, one of these trades is treated drastically differently because of society's perception of hairstylists, and I am looking to break that mold. Sure doing hair is fun, creative, and engaging, but it is still my job. And just like any job, I'm only asking to be paid my worth, just as I would do the same for you at your occupation.

Do you know why I do hair? For the bright smile on my guests' faces like this one!

When you leave my chair I want you to feel confident, fresh, and ready to slay the day. And I want you to feel comfortable when you're in my chair as well, that's why the experience is catered specifically for you. I listen to your needs and meet (and often exceed) your expectations, all while working within your beauty budget and communicating with you the entire time.

Some looks simply can't be done in a day, and that's where your pathway to great hair days begins-with a plan. Once we know where you want to go, I come up with several options on how to get there.

Why are you cutting my hair dry?

I get asked this question a lot, and the main reason I cut your hair when it's dry, is because I want to see what your natural texture is, and work with that.

First I'm a color specialist that's trained in the art of dry cutting so chances are we're also going to color your hair, and there's nothing I hate more than cutting off the hair that I just colored, especially if it's balayage because then we'd just cut off your bright ends.

Second, in a general sense, how you wore your hair into the salon is often how you wear it, thus if I make it look good before I even shampoo it then that will lead you to success when you're at home. (Although house calls are always an option if you supply the coffee, and a car to pick me up :)

Finally, you see what I'm doing. When your hair is wet it's more difficult for you to see if you want it shorter, more layers, more texture, because I'm trained to understand hair when it's wet you're not.

After a dry cut, you get an amazing shampoo and style that will take you out into the beautiful day ahead.
