It was taken on April 6, 2026, by a camera mounted on one of Orion's solar array wings — not by a human hand, not through a window, but by a camera pointed back at the spacecraft from outside, from deep space, from 250,000 miles away from Earth.
Look at what's in this single frame.
On the left: Orion Integrity — the spacecraft carrying four humans, the first to travel this far from Earth since Apollo 13 in 1970. The NASA worm logo visible on the hull. Solar panels catching sunlight.
On the right: the Moon — its far side, the hemisphere that never faces Earth, cratered and ancient, filling the frame with 4 billion years of impact history.
And in the upper right corner, barely visible, a tiny bright crescent: Earth. Home. 250,000 miles away and shrinking.
Three objects, three scales. A spacecraft. A world. A planet.
NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day featured this image on April 11, 2026 — four days after it was captured, one day after the crew came home.
This is not a composite. Not a render. Not CGI. A single frame, taken automatically, during the six minutes before four human beings disappeared behind the Moon and lost contact with Earth for 40 minutes.
