Serum Spotlight: Vitamin B5 + Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Ready to get nerdy with me?🤓

Today we are gonna dork out on some sciences, uses and benefits of this little unassuming serum, so that you can better understand it for your own use, and better recommend it when chatting with customers!

Vitamin B5- Also known as calcium pantothenate or pantothenic acid. Added for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties, able to stimulate the skin's natural healing process and even reduce the spread of acne.

Hyaluronic Acid (way deeper dive)- SUPER fun fact: Hyaluronic acid isn't actually an acid, its a polysaccharide (a sugar). It was first used commercially in 1942 to be used in baking as an egg white substitute. 🤯

Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in your body, and 50% is found in your skin. Over time, your stores deplete due to natural aging and sun exposure. Hyaluronic acid is found in the ECM (extracellular matrix molecules) of your skin, so kinda a framework that runs between your epidermis, dermis, and subcutis.

The cause of wrinkles is three fold- decreased collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is necessary for holding up the structure of the ECM, bathing the elastin and collagen in water. Without water, collagen does not regenerate, and elastin becomes dry and brittle (read:wrinkles).

How does topical hyaluronic acid work?

There are two types of hyaluronic acid applied topically, to achieve two different end results (check ingredient labels to know exactly what's in your product)-

Hyaluronic acid- stays on surface of skin, protects and softens the skin

Sodium Hyaluronate- a salt derived from hyaluronic acid, more easily absorbed deeper into the skin. Locks moisture in.

(Pro tip: Did you see our serum has both kinds?? Hey-o!)

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it does not contain water, but it draws water in from its environment. In fact, hyaluronic acid can draw in 1000x its weight in water. Because we're talking hydration, not moisture (oil), this is an amazing option for oily and acne prone skin. It combats their often times issue of inflammation and oil production, without over moisturizing.

(Pro tip: Because hyaluronic acid draws moisture in, it should be applied to a damp face. If you live in a dry climate, particular care should be taken to apply to a damp face and apply moisturizer over the HA. If no moisturizer is applied over, the HA will draw water from the deeper layers of the skin when none is found in the air. This is a concern only in very arid climates, but keep in mind when consulting with your customers from the desert states!)

I had so much fun learning about hyaluronic acid this morning, and I hope this is helpful for you! As for me, after learning all this, now I just want to bathe in it!
