Backcountry Herbs

Bringing this back up because its Mayweed season again here in East Idaho.

Lots of harvesting this week!!! Theres generally one or two ‘hell weeks’ a season where I find myself waking early and out harvesting with the sunrise every day to keep up. Then the heat forces me inside mid day, and then back outside for a bit again after the sun sets.
Its rarely ever this hot, this long and this early in the season for East Idaho, so many older homes dont have AC because of this. I can keep my house comfortable most days until the outside temperatures gets above 80-85°…. And weve had over a week of high 90 to over 100° weather. Needless to say its been hot at night and not very restful. Im ready for this week to be over!

This morning we got a really nice reprieve from Mother Nature! She sent some clouds and a little rain to cool things down until lunchtime! Sooo after i harvested Lavender, i had plenty of time to do some serious weeding in cool conditions!!! The rain was light and so refreshing to work in!

Another early morning, up with the sun to beat the heat. Went for the first picking of St John’s Wort which will probably be the only trip there. I normally go at least twice but the plants are different this year, so it might not be worth the trip next week. I checked a few other locations in that same area and was able to grab some Yarrow and Selfheal. Back at home the Chamomile has jumped from two handfuls of flowers on Saturday to full production!!!

Not much exciting happening over the weekend. It has been just stinking hot! So we tried to stay inside for the bulk of the day.
John surprised me by weeding and rototilling the Calendula plot and main garden, which is always a HUGE refresh to the isle-ways. He actually found the Tulsi! It still struggling to make a comeback but may give me a little harvest yet, but im not holding my breath.
