13.1 @ The Fort.

Following the Ice Age Trail Half in May I wanted to keep my running consistent and give myself an opportunity to break the 2 hour mark officially. I knew sub 2 was well within my reach as long as I stayed consistent, hit the mileage, and manage through the hot summer temps.

Overall, the training block went well with only some minor setbacks due to travel & illness interfering a month prior to the race. Luckily, majority of the base work served me well and was still able to feel confident going in on race day.

Strategy was to come out conservative and play it smart for the first 6-7 miles to get a feel for the course and then bump up intensity as I’d get closer to the finish. Talks of the hills and an uncertainty for just how hot it would be kept my ego in check. Having gotten through the first half feeling good I was able to turn it up for the back portion and push to break the 1:50 mark (1:45-1:50 was my A tier goal range).

This race has solidified my decision to go after my first full in 2026. Time to get some off season strength work in, plan, and to “dream a little bigger.” 26.2 I’m coming for you.

2025 Ice Age Trail Half Marathon - 2:09:09

My training is based in STRENGTH but that doesn’t stop me from venturing out into other realms of fitness / health. In fact - without strength training - this most recent dip into endurance training wouldn’t have been nearly as successful.
This race - the Ice Age Half - had been on my list for too long not to sign up. Happy to have completed it successfully and below my goal time (goal was 2:17 - 10:30/mi pace for 13.1).
Total distance covered was a bit longer according to race graph and garmin gps @ ~13.5 miles so completing it in 2:09 was great and snagging a 2:05 half marathon time was great.
Some selfies from my Favorite training runs - the first being on 12.29.24 out in the rain and the second on a nice warm 20 degree day on 3/2/25 (ice ice and some snot most likely).
Will be continuing to push the running a bit more but recalibrating at the moment to hit the weights a bit harder.

💥 client transformation! 💥

Toby has come a long way since the beginning of the year. He’s dropped 20lbs and significantly changed his body composition!

He had a solid starting point (muscle mass, consistent resistance training program and on his own, etc) but wasn’t his ideal composition. So we had to change it up a bit.

So what did we do?

Loads of cardio? No.

Intermittent fasting? No.

Keto? No.

Increased training frequency and duration? No.

At first we made small changes to his eating habits after doing a food log and seeing some areas that could use some improvement. A big one was his protein intake so he began to prioritize that around every meal.

We continued to journal a bit and then got to see his average total intake (it was way higher than he expected to see - truth is, it usually is. We tend to underestimate how much we eat majority of the time).

So we set him up to do some basic macro tracking (protein, carbs, fats) along with a caloric intake strategy. He started to lose weight like clockwork ⏰

However, progress no matter how good eventually slows so we’d readjust his macros and make appropriate drops when necessary. We’d also adjust his intake to include some “diet breaks” like when on vacation or going on a long weekend. Towards the last month we did add in some low intensity cardio (2 - 30 minute walks) so we wouldn’t have to drop his calories any lower. That was enough to push him into the 20lbs down territory!

I’m super proud of Toby and his commitment to his goals. He was honest and open with communication, worked hard, and was down for any adjustment that I wanted to try. Also was nice enough to let me share his progress pics 📷

First Family workout complete💪🏻

Thanks to all my clients, friends, and family who have shown us so much love, outreach, and support since we’ve welcomed Sylvan into our lives.

Awaken Your Strength

With summer approaching for many of us (hello fellow midwesterners) it may soon be time to hit the pool, the lake, take on yard work, and do other activities when shirts off may be an option.
...
So if you are like me (particularly my before pic on the right)- taking your shirt off may not be the most comfortable option at all. I know myself, and many of my male clients, have felt this way especially in regards to their chest/pec region.
...
So if you’re a guy who may feel self conscious about your shirt off - particularly about your chest - and want to start changing it Here are some 🔑 points to remember.
...
1. If you want to change the look, size, and shape of your chest it is possible. Regardless of your genetics we can stimulate hypertrophy (muscle growth) through training.
...
2. Movements are important and you may be currently doing standard “push” movements such as push-ups, bench, db bench, etc : but developing the mind / muscle connection to the pecs will be more important for making it happen. Far too many guys who lack chest development also lack the ability to contract their chest at will. I didn’t see nearly any progress with my chest until I dropped my ego (lowered the weights and changed exercise selection) and began to work on getting solid connections.
...
3. Understanding the chest anatomy and function is crucial as well (swipe to see the second pic). “With the origin fixed, the pectoralis major adducts, medially rotates, and transversely adducts arm at glenohumeral joint. It assists in flexion of the arm (via its clavicular head) and It assists in extension of the arm (via the sternocostal head) at the glenohumeral joint.” It has other functions too - but what this means is that it primarily works to bring your arms toward the midline of the body.
...
Considering all the above - you must make sound decisions based on where your current training / developmental status is at.
...
For the novice my advice would be:
...
- Pick exercises where load is easily adjustable and the ability to feel the pecs are high. My go to for this would be a FLY VARIATION. Whether it be pec deck, cable, or even with bands.
...

Had a great time hitting the trails at Fort Ben with over the weekend. ..
Recently running has come back into my routine - after a nice long hiatus. ..
We can get to a point with an activity or exercise where we think “this just isn’t for me”. That’s exactly where I got with running about 6-7 years ago...
So what’s different now? My APPROACH...
1. More flexible with my mileage per week and my intensity. ..
2. More work on trails rather than on pavement - especially with longer distances. ..
3. Understanding that my running is my running - I’m doing this to support my wellbeing and for fun. Stressing over races, pace, and absolutes isn’t what I’m about at the moment. I want to maintain a cardio respiratory base to accelerate recovery from training, relieve some stress and improve my mental health, get outdoors and explore new trail systems...

Strength training = mobility training...
I had a client last week ask how much I practice my mobility. And I gave a rough estimate - maybe 10% of the time I train it is doing something very specific with mobility... but the truth is if we are lifting with control, full range of motion (or whatever ROM we’re working with) we are working mobility. ..
Now in general and for most lifts we won’t be pushing that end range that looks almost impossible. But increasing our ranges - aka all those mobility gains - is achievable by following principles directly related to strength...
1. Progressive overload..
2. Time under tension ..
3. Mindful movement : awareness of body in space..
4. Patience..
Passive stretching can be useful but active mobility work: being able to push, pull, lift in those ranges will lead to in my experience superior results...
Lastly, you’re not going to see results in your flexibility by holding stretches for 20 or 30s. Increasing that to 60s+ to 3 minutes will serve you much better. My sweet spot for most active mobility exercises has been around ~2minutes...

Rollout progressions to help you build a resilient and strong core

Photos 05/03/2020

Think it through...
As many fitness facilities, gyms, and studios reopen we have to be tactical in our approach...
Considering the situation at hand (preventing further spread of Covid19) but also considering where our training state, mental state, and health is at...
My recommendations for the latter...
1. Do not immediately pick things back up where you left off. Chances are you’re detrained: getting back into a similar routine but dropping the weight/volume by 12.5-20% could make a significant difference in coming back safely and efficiently. Your STRENGTH will come back quickly...
2. You probably haven’t lost that much (if any) lean muscle mass if you’ve been doing some maintenance work at home. I know this is causing some people stress right now: again, muscle stores water and glycogen especially in a “trained state”. If you’ve been training less you probably aren’t storing at the same capacity...
3. Be patient with yourself and with others. If you feel like you’ve been hit with the “Quarantine 15” and let yourself go a bit: that is ok. No one can absolutely predict how their body and mind will handle these type of stressors. However, now is the time to be very intentional with the routine that you choose to create. Make what you’re doing INTENTIONAL and repeatable. ...
4. Prioritize your health: Your immune system is probably a bit suppressed by having to WFH (work from home). Help yourself and immune system by sleeping, staying hydrated, and getting outdoors... in addition to all the other covid recs...
5. Embrace this transition. I for one - as a trainer/studio owner and as guy who loves to workout - has been significantly impacted by this. I know I’m not going to be taking this upcoming opportunity for granted...
Let’s be smart, train hard, and enjoy this : Awaken Your Strength!

Option 4: Superset. ..
Pick two movements that challenge the same muscle groups. ..
Hit them back to back - The demands / intensity just shot way up. ..
For my example I’m performing a piked push-up followed with a kettlebell press. That kettlebell press could be deemed “easy” on its own - but not anymore...
As you progress aim to increase volume/reps with both exercises or keep 1 constant while increasing reps with the other. ..
Some other go to supersets could be: Bulgarian Split Squats directly to Goblet Squats. Pushups to dumbbell floor presses. Chin-ups to banded bicep curls...
