What's The Best Method For Starting Locs?
This is an ongoing debate. Most people are familiar with the coil set and Palm roll technique. It's the usual method most salons and locticians employ. This method I believe is good for people who are not very active and don't sweat in their heads too much. You cannot wash these locs until they have started to loc or else you risk destroying the coil, then you have to start all over. They also tend to go through what's known as the "ugly stage" while they are budding and frizzy until they mature.
There is another method that has been around longer than palm rolling but is lesser known. It's called interlocking. It involves using a latch hook or some other similar tool to latch the hair onto itself. This results in hair that is already fully locked from the beginning. You can shampoo the locs the very first day and this method is good for those who lead pretty active lifestyles. Although this method is longer and tends to be more expensive than palm rolling, it gives your hair more versatility from the beginning and also ideal for those with longer lengths of hair wishing to start locs.
Which ever method you prefer, make sure you are fully educated on care and maintenance and remember not to over twist or over interlock the hair to preserve your edges and keep the locs from thinning. HAPPY LOCKING!!

Loc Maintenance Tip: How to Deep Clean Your Locs
Locs are a striking style to rock but sometimes between lint, dirt and product build up, they can get pretty dirty. So dirty that it doesn't come out with traditional shampooing. All that gunk can show in the locs, leaving them dingy and sometimes an unpleasant smell. There is a way to deep clean them and my tried and true method only required three household items: Baking Soda, Apple Cider vinegar, and Vodka (no seriously...vodka...lol. Cheap vodka is ok). Start by your baking soda with water until its a thick paste and spread this from the scalp to ends of your locs, making sure they are well and generously coated. Then, taking a spray bottle, spray apple cider vinegar generously all over the locs, from scalp to tip. You will notice immediately the mixture will fizz and bubble...this is ok. Those bubbles are eating away at the dirt buildup in the locs. I would cover with a plastic cap and let this sit for as long as you can...an hour at minimum. Then, add a small amount of vodka to your regular shampoo ( i add about a shot of vodka to my 10 ounce bottle of liquid African black soap). The alcohol boosts the cleansing power of the shampoo and adds shine to your hair! Shampoo your locs well at least twice and rinse well. African Black soap can be very drying so make sure you follow with a deep conditioning. You will notice most, if not all of your buildup has been cleansed from your locs, leaving them shiny and soft. If your hair has a substantial amount of buildup, you may need to try this method a couple of times to get all of it out.
