Haircuts might seem like a simple, everyday thing… but for many autistic kids, they can feel overwhelming. The sounds of the clippers, the feeling of hair falling on their skin, sitting still, the bright lights, someone touching their head. It’s a lot for a little nervous system to process.

What looks like a “quick trim” to most people can be a huge challenge for a child with autism.

That’s why we are so incredibly thankful for Samantha Moore at The 122 Barbershop. She is patient, calm, and never rushes him. She gives him the time he needs, lets him take breaks, and meets him exactly where he is. She doesn’t make him feel like he’s being difficult. She makes him feel understood.

She goes out of her way to bring him something special every time. One time she gave him flash cards about money. That's how he learned to recognize and count money. Another time she gave him a multiplication and division workbook. So he got out his calculator and learned basic equations.

This time she gave him a travel workbook and it has the Statue of Liberty on the front. He's learning about New York since we're heading there soon! We won't have time to visit the big city or tour much since it's a medical trip that requires 3 hours drive time daily, plus long appointments each day. But we'll still be in the state of New York and about 1.5 hours away!

People like her make such a big difference in our world. When someone shows that kind of kindness and patience, it turns something stressful into something manageable… and sometimes even a little bit successful. This was by far our best visit yet! He has come a long way!

It may just be a haircut to some people, but to us, it’s a big win.

To the people who take the time to understand our kids instead of rushing them, thank you. We appreciate you more than you know. 💙
