For me, New Year’s is a clean slate — a fresh start, a time to review what’s working and what isn’t, and to make changes where I can.
Looking back on 2025 has brought up a mix of emotions I haven’t really experienced before. It was chaotic and discouraging — especially behind the chair, and even more so as a business owner.
I started working a part-time job on top of running the salon. I chose not to collect commission from my stylists because, as younger stylists, they were trying even harder to survive. I raised my rates to keep up with the cost of supplies — only to lower them again so clients didn’t feel priced out. My schedule was all over the place, with extremely busy days followed by slower, empty weeks.
I wanted to own a salon so I could motivate and support stylists in ways I felt were lacking when I was first behind the chair. I want stylists to feel safe and confident advocating for themselves — with clients, coworkers, and managers. I want a space where clients and stylists are equally excited to be a part of that salon.
This year, my greatest insecurity was feeling like I wasn’t able to give enough. It made me ask questions I didn’t expect to be asking.
How do I help people love an industry that often isn’t showing up for the little guys?
What happens when we’re doing everything right, putting ourselves out there, and seeing very little return?
What if I can’t “spend money to make money”?
What if everyone - here and elsewhere - is in the same boat?
Recently, my stylists thanked me for being their boss - for making them feel seen, for creating a space where they can exist fully, and for feeling supported by me as much as I am by them. They reminded me that l’ve already done so much of what I set out to accomplish as a boss and salon owner, even on days I didn’t feel up to par.
As we move into 2026, I can’t say that it will be easier.
But I do know that none of us are going into it alone.
One of the greatest gifts of being a hairstylist is the ability to create community — to hold space for one another, to listen, to support, and to grow side by side.
That’s what carries us forward- we are simply better together.
