If you grew up in a Black household, you probably had that bright blue jar sitting on the bathroom counter—Blue Magic Hair Grease. It’s been around since the 1960s, and for decades, it was the go-to for moisturizing and growing hair. But was it really growing our hair, or just coating our scalps?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜

Blue Magic was created by J. Strickland & Co., a company founded in 1963 by White businessman, J. Strickland who saw a gap where there was a lack of hair care companies catering to Black hair needs. Blue Magic was introduced as an affordable, long-lasting hair dressing that promised to fight dryness and breakage. It became a staple in many Black households because it gave the hair that shiny, slick look and made styling easier. However, its main ingredient—petroleum (aka petrolatum)—acts more like a barrier than a true moisturizer. It sits on top of the scalp rather than penetrating to nourish it. For years, we were told to “grease our scalps” to promote hair growth, but in reality, products heavy in petroleum and mineral oil can clog pores, attract dirt, and even slow down natural hair growth. So, while it gave the illusion of moisture, it wasn’t truly feeding our hair what it needed.

𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐩 & 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡

If you want real moisture and scalp nourishment, here’s what I recommend as a natural hair care specialist (𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞, 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭):

✅ Lightweight Oils – Instead of heavy grease, use oils that pe*****te the scalp and hair shaft:

• Jamaican Black Castor Oil – Stimulates growth and strengthens hair.
• Rosemary Oil – Increases circulation and stimulates growth.
• Jojoba Oil – Mimics natural scalp sebum, keeping it balanced and healthy.
