🤳🏻 idk who needs to hear this but... running into a list of ingredients you can’t pronounce should make you want to expand your vocabulary, not close off your mind.
💭 This type of thinking follows the vein of the anti-science sentiment of the “clean” beauty industry. Clean beauty capitalizes off of a perfect storm created by consumer ignorance fueled by fear. Exploiting mistrust in the industry, while trying to convince consumers that ‘conventional’ products can be blamed for all their issues/ailments. The cure? Buy ‘clean’ products! This is a denigrating marketing strategy that trains people not to trust science, encourages conspiratorial thinking around regulations, and undermines integrity of the whole industry.
✍🏻 The truth is that “clean” beauty standards are all built on a platform of misinformation. A product or ingredient being “natural” does not mean it is better, greener, or safer. There are many natural ingredients that are known irritants, allergens, and even carcinogens. An ingredient being natural tells us nothing about its safety or it’s usefulness in a formula. We have to think of all ingredients as chemicals, whether natural or synthetic, and think about the context they are going to be used and in what percentages.
🔬Many ingredients sourced from nature are contaminated and need to be refined before they are safe for use– castor oil, talc, zinc oxide all need to be carefully refined or re-synthesized before being safe for formulation in cosmetics.
🔎A molecule being synthesized, or “built” in a lab says nothing about its properties or effects. Whether nature assembles a molecule, or a scientist builds it; the structure is the same. Just because some ingredients or products are man-made’ does not inherently make them inferior or dangerous. In fact, in many cases using a natural ingredient where a synthetic alternative is available is more detrimental to the environment and the planet, as opposed to deriving the ingredient in a clean, controlled, energy efficient lab!
🗣 “clean” “non toxic” “free of parabens” “free of chemicals” “all natural” are all marketing buzzwords to be aware of!
