Hogar Materno - A Cuban maternity home
The maternity home, staffed with an around-the-clock nurse, houses expectant mothers with high-risk pregnancies. There are approximately 209 maternity homes throughout Cuba, one per each municipality. Many of the residents are admitted for malnutrition, one of the deleterious effects of the 40-year-old United States economic embargo against Cuba. Cuba addresses this issue by providing 2,800 calories per day for every pregnant woman, prenatal vitamins and three meals a day for maternity home residents (Bernal 2001). Other common high-risk factors of the women at Hogar Materno were diabetes, anemia and twins. The residents, ages 22 to 32, ranged in gestational age from 20 to 39 weeks. Once labor begins, the women are driven 40 minutes to the hospital for delivery in Pinar del Rio, the closest neighboring city (Noda Gonzalez 2001).

I urge women and men to take their health, their habits, and their diets seriously, especially a few months before conceiving. Quite a few of the placentas I've seen lately have not been in the best shape.
Some of what I've seen that constitutes as less than optimal: calcifications and cysts, smaller than normal placentas, quite a few hematomas, and the placentas are compromised and causing issues such as IUGR, high blood pressure and Pre-eclampsia.
Some of the ones pictured below caused issues such as pre-e with some calcification that could be felt as gritty or having a rough texture

Postpartum support matters more than most people realize. The days and nights after birth are when your body is healing, your hormones are shifting, and you feel completely sleep deprived.
I’m a certified birth & postpartum doula offering holistic daytime and overnight postpartum care for families who want real support, not just someone to hold the baby.
My care includes newborn support, maternal recovery, nourishment, light household help, and education so you feel steady and confident when I’m not there.
If you’re pregnant or know someone due soon, message me or comment below 🩷

Getting messages like these from previous clients are the best. It makes you see that you're actually impacting someone in a positive way. A year later, and I'm still thought of. That's something special.

Do you ever find yourself at your doctor or midwives office feeling rushed? Or they tell you "this is routine" but you don't even know what that means. Routine for whom and why has it become routine? You want to participate in your care without fear or blindly complying.
Most pregnant women don’t need more information, they need context.
They’re being offered tests, timelines, procedures, opinions, and it's often without explanation, without space, and without understanding what’s actually optional.
So they either:
• comply while feeling uneasy or confused
• resist everything out of fear
• or spiral trying to research it all alone
None of those feel good. Pregnancy shouldn’t feel like a constant test you’re afraid of failing.
It should feel steady, informed, and grounded, even inside the medical system.
Some things you can do:
• Ask for clarity, and more information.
• Ask for more time to decide
• Ask what the alertnatives are
Use clear language. Asking questions about your care does not make you difficult and participation does not mean automatically agreeing to everything being offered.

For 2026: Flow with the energy of reciprocity.
Not overgiving.
Not proving.
Not chasing connection, love, or respect.
It’s choosing exchanges where what you give is met with care, effort, presence, and respect.
Where your time is valued.
Your boundaries are honored.
And receiving doesn’t come with guilt.
If it feels heavy, forced, or one-sided, you don’t have to stay where the balance is off.
