Hey everyone! I (Jill) will be out of the shop July 6-22 due to having surgery. Please plan ahead of time to get scheduled either before or after I get back! Thank you!
First off I apologize for the lack of updates. Treatments, symptoms and results have been a roller-coaster the last few months. Bottom line in a nutshell.
The leukemia has spread to my blood and the blast cells keep mutating. They're not going to be able to get the AML in remission. It's terminal.
I've received a second opinion from Dr. Huyck at the Nebraska Cancer Center. He concurs with Dr Bhatt at UNMC.
Both said June is worst case, but I could live much longer. Much longer if God decides me worthy of another miracle.
With that said, I'm officially announcing my retirement from barbering.
I'm managing to keep my spirits up. My wife Chris is my rock and is holding up well herself.
I have a few things I'd like to attend to between now and early 2027. When they're each accomplished I'll let all know I'm still hanging on. Either that or Chris will let you know of my arrangements if you'd like to kick some dirt on my grave. Thank you all for your support and kind words as I've taken on this journey.
Sincerely, Jim Harrer
Mike and Jill will be out of the shop the rest of this week for state wrestling!! We will be back on Monday!! Rachel and D will be in the next three days if you need in! Thank you and Have a great week!
Mike and Jill will be out of the Shop this week, February 19th-21st for state wrestling! We will be back to work on Monday.
Next week, unfortunately I (Jill) will only be in the shop for Monday and Tuesday and then will have to travel to New York with my husband for a family funeral. I’ll be back the following Monday, March 2nd. I have reached out to as many people as I could about rescheduling appts but unfortunately there are a few I wasn’t able to get in contact with. If I did not get ahold of you, I wrote you down with Rachel for your appts. I hope this works.
Thanks again
Jill Garrah

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of our family shop. We couldn’t do it without you.
51 yrs in the making and going strong 💈
It’s that time where schedules get crazy and holidays get crazier! Give us a call ahead of time to get your haircut scheduled! My (Jill) book is filling up before Christmas already so we may just need to get scheduled during break if possible.
Let us know if you are needing any gift certificates as well! We can do them in any amount you would like!
It's taken me a while to put out this update. The reason being, I'm not real happy with the way things are progressing. I saw my oncologist on 30 Oct. Dr. Bhatt is well respected in his field and I have confidence in his team and treatments. However, it's kind of disheartening when your oncologist says he's a bit baffled.
My leukemia blast cells were down to 3% on my last bone marrow biopsy. The biopsy also showed the marrow is generating cells. However, the cells keep dying off, causing me to need blood and/or platelet transfusions. Three times a week at 2-5 hours at a pop.
Bhatt's not sure if it's the remaining cancer cells, the chemo or the fact my kidneys aren't working at 100%. I've had a functioning CKD for a couple years.
He ran about 15 different blood tests on Monday to help figure it out. I've seen some of the results on my online UNMC page. What I've read on google about the results. Can scare the he'll out of a guy or send him down a never-ending rabbit hole of confusion!
I'll just have to wait for Bhatt's verdict on the appointment I have on 13 Nov.
He does want to do a 5th round of chemo starting on the 8th for seven days. Then another bone marrow biopsy early Dec.
The light at the end of the tunnel has become smaller. I still feel pretty good and am keeping my faith that I'll get there eventually. However, all this nonsense wears on a guy.
Now I've just have to decide if I want to risk the chance of gathering with family. I have zilch for an immune system. Statistics show that more people die from an infection than the cancer itself.
After appointments and biopsy, I'll put out another update.
Sincerely, Jim
It's time for an update, but I'm not sure where to begin.
At the last minute, they canceled my 4th round of chemo on the 27th. It was due to the low blood counts again. Especially my white blood counts. My immune system is pretty much worthless. They keep my red blood cells and platelet counts at a survival rate with numerous transfusions.
I saw one of the doctors today, and we're cautiously going ahead with a 4th round of chemo starting tomorrow, the 10th. This round will only be seven days of IV chemo, along with seven days of chemo pills.
Needless to say, I'm being a difficult AML patient to treat for them. Dr. Bhatt and his team are all working on and studying my case. I feel I'm in good hands, and they're giving it their best.
Is this all frustrating and depressing? Yes, but all I have to do is look around, and there's many others that have a tougher battle than I going on. There's no end in sight right now. I have a feeling this nonsense is going to drag into the holidays. However, I'm keeping faith it'll all work out. Thanks to all for your prayers and support. I'll send out another update in a few weeks.
Sincerely, Jim
Here's where I stand in this fight to beat this AML. My recent bone marrow biopsy showed there is still a 3% saturation of the CD34 blast leukemia cells in my blood. Before the first three rounds of chemo, I was at 22% saturation. Therefore, this long haul to beat this is going to take longer. We're going to do a fourth round of chemo starting on the 20th. That is if my blood counts stay high enough. We're hoping this 4th round will get that last 3%.
I'm still feeling and doing good, but it all wears on you. I'm tired of UNMC being my life.
Sincerely, Jim
Update time. Finished my 6th day of chemo infusions today. One more tomorrow, then seven more days of chemo pills on this 3rd round.
Saw one of my oncology team doctors this morning. She was pleased with the way I looked. After this 3rd round, I'll have another bone marrow biopsy on September 4th. It takes seven days to get all the results back. Hopefully, I'll have it in remission then. If not, they're talking about a fourth round. I'm hoping to have all this nonsense done before the holidays.
This round has been a little tougher than the first two. It has worn me down more. However, I still feel pretty good overall. It just seems like it's a never-ending cycle. I've had six units of platelets and two blood transfusions so far this month. The month's only half over. Miss working and getting out and about. I'm still managing to keep my spirits up.
I keep telling myself we're in the final stretch! Thanks again for everyone's thoughts and prayers. We'll get there.
Sincerely, Jim
