Ever wondered what the SPF 10 - Sun Protection Factor and the # mean?

The SPF it's a measurement of the sunscreen's ability to protect your skin from the UVB rays. Here's a calculation: "if it takes one minute for your unprotected skin to start turning red (in the sun) using SPF 10 theoretically protects your skin for 10 minutes.  SPF 30, if your skin turns red in 10 minutes, protected for 300 minutes, or five hours.  That doesn't take into account the difference between physical (zinc) or chemical (avobene, octinoxate, Homosalate, octisalate, Octocrylene) sunscreens. Zinc "sits" on the skin while the others absorbs into the skin.

I recommend SPF 30, reapply every couple hours due to sweating, getting in and out of the water and rubbing the sunscreen off. Every couple hours is my rule.

As a veteran esthetician of 15+ years I've seen many skin, many skin cancer skin. I have a gal of 28 years young having skin cancer, need to have her skin check every 6 months. A client in her 70s needing to get skin cancer removed, every 3 months, all over her body. Another 18 years young gal, fair, blonde, blue eyes, tells me she makes herself burn the beginning of summer so she can have the beautiful golden tan for the summer. UGH! Many, many clients in between.

Sunscreen safety, be wise, sunburns are accumulative, think about your future skin. Age 30, 40, 50, etc...

Do you know what is in your sunscreen?

Check your SPF products.

Are these ingredients in your sunscreen, makeup or moisturizers?

Oxybenzone - a known hormone disruptor, bleaching and killing of corals.
Octinoxate - an endocrine disruptor for human and harms marine life.
Homosalate - ease of application and absorption, a hormone disruptor.
Octocrylene - ease of absorption. 
Benzene - a known carcinogen with multiple recalls of sunscreens. 
Retinyl Palmitate - a form of vitamin A to combat aging but increases sun damage and aging skin.
Fragrance - not required by FDA to list the hidden potentially toxic or irritating chemicals. 

Specially avoid chemical sunscreen if you are planning on becoming pregnant, currently pregnant, nursing, immune compromised, or going through chemo and radiation.

Chemical ingredients easily applicable, absorbs and washes off with ease, often found in spray sunscreen, moisturizer and makeup. Hence, the absorption rather than "sitting" on the skin to "reflect and block" UV rays.

Chemical sunscreen is banned In Palau, Thailand, Aruba, some parts of Mexico, US Virgin  and Bonaire, known to damaging coral reefs.

What sunscreen can you buy?

Anything with zinc and/or titanium dioxide sunscreen. It applies white, thick and pasty. They have the ability to "sit" on the skin to reflect/block" the UVA/B damaging rays.
