IMPORTANT TIPS BELOW! Did you know that there’s a SEA of SAND right here in Colorado? The Great Sand Dune National Park in Colorado is a place you can hike, surf and sled all in one afternoon! These dunes are SO BIG they can be seen from 60 miles away!

✅ Smart Tips for Sand Dunes & Sandboarding

What to bring / wear
 • Plenty of water (you’ll work hard climbing dunes and the dry high-altitude sun hits strong)
 • High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat to protect against the bright sun and glare off the sand
 • Closed-toe shoes or socks (sand can get extremely hot, up to ~150 °F on summer afternoons)
 • Light, breathable layers: long sleeves/pants can help with sun and warm-sand abrasion, but you’ll want comfort too
 • A small backpack for snacks, a first aid kit (since falls happen), and maybe a change of clothes if you get sandy

Gear & rental info
 • Make sure you’re renting a sand-specific board or sled, normal snow-sleds or snowboards won’t glide properly on sand.
 • Waxing the base of the board (or sled) is important, the coarse sand eats up wax quickly and without it you’ll really slow down.
 • If you’re going to a place like the dunes in Colorado: the park itself doesn’t rent boards/sleds, you’ll need to pick up the rental outside the park or in town.

Timing & terrain
 • Go early morning or evening (especially in summer) to avoid the hottest sand and possible thunderstorms.
 • Choose beginner-friendly slopes first, smaller dune faces make for easier runs while you get used to the feel.
 • Remember: you’ll have to hike up the dune after your ride down, so don’t go overboard on slope size if you’re not prepared.

Safety & good behaviour
 • Stay off vegetated/fragile dune surfaces, ride in permitted zones only.
 • Give other riders space, check your route before dropping in, and start with a controlled speed.
 • Watch weather & sand conditions. If the sand is wet, icy, or very firm from recent rain/snow, sliding can become tricky or risky. #visitcolorado #explorecolorado #nationalparks #colorado #thingstodoincolorado #coloradotrip #greatsanddunesnationalpark #greatsanddunes #travelcolorado 11/04/2025
