With everything going on between Cambodia and Thailand right now, my heart aches for my people.
Even though I wasn’t there during the horrors of the Killing Fields, I was born after it in 1980, in a refugee camp in Thailand. I am the child of survivors.

Our parents, aunts, uncles — all of them are feeling it again. These aren’t just political headlines for us. These are triggers. These are flashbacks. These are wounds that never truly healed.

My older brother was only 3 years old when he lived through it. And he remembered things no child ever should. The kind of memories that live in the dark corners of your mind. The kind that never let you forget.

Rest in peace, big brother. You carried so much for so long.

Some of our family survived by hiding in pits full of the dead holding their breath as more bodies were thrown on top of them. That kind of trauma doesn’t fade. It doesn’t pass. It’s inherited. It’s alive in us.

We come from a line of survivors. We’ve endured enough.
We’re a small country still trying to rebuild what war and genocide broke.

We don’t want more destruction.
We want peace.
We want healing.
We want to be left alone to love, grow, and live.

Let history not repeat itself.
Let our story be one of survival, not silence.
