🦃El Día de Acción de Gracias, o Thanksgiving, en Estados Unidos se celebra el cuarto jueves de noviembre. En 2024, será el 28 de noviembre.
Esta festividad es una de las más importantes en el país y se caracteriza por:
Ser un día para dar gracias por las bendiciones recibidas
Ser el inicio de la temporada de fiestas y compras
Ser una ocasión para reunirse con familiares y amigos
Consistir en una cena en la que el pavo es el plato principal
El origen de esta tradición se remonta a 1621, cuando los colonos ingleses celebraron su primera cosecha con los nativos de la zona. En ese entonces, los peregrinos del Nuevo Mundo se mostraron agradecidos por la abundante cosecha de grano, cebada, frijoles y calabazas, ya que solo la mitad de ellos había sobrevivido al primer invierno.
El presidente George Washington declaró el Día de Acción de Gracias como festividad nacional en 1789. Sin embargo, en la década de 1930, el presidente Franklin D. Roosevelt propuso adelantar la fecha de la celebración al tercer jueves de noviembre para estimular la economía. Esta decisión generó controversia y no fue hasta 1941, cuando el Congreso aprobó una ley que estableció el cuarto jueves de noviembre como la fecha oficial.
