Pine often gets overlooked as "just another tree," but it has a long history of practical, culinary, and traditional use.
Its needles contain vitamin C, flavonoids, and other plant compounds that have made pine a favorite in teas, syrups, infused honey, and oxymels. Pine resin has traditionally found its way into salves, balms, and other topical preparations, while the wood, bark, and fibers have been used for everything from tools and construction to cordage and crafts.
Certain species also provide edible pine nuts and pollen that have been used as food for generations.
Not all evergreens are pine, and not all pine species are used in the same ways. Proper identification is always important before harvesting or using any wild plant.
Always do your research before introducing into your diet, especially if you have any underlying or pre-existing conditions, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking medications.
