17 teaspoons of added sugar is about 270 calories. Added sugar calories offer no nutritional value and increase your risk for health issues and disease.

It is advised by the World Health Organization that individuals do not consume more than 5% of their calories in added sugar per day AT MOST. Some people consume more than 25% of their calories in added sugar per day.

Excess sugar consumption can cause inflammation, oxidative stress, and obesity, these factors can also influence a person’s risk of developing cancer or other diseases.

Cardiovascular Disease:
A large prospective study in 2014Trusted Source found that people who got 17–21% of their daily calories from added sugar had a 38% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease (CVD) than those who consumed 8% added sugars. For those who consumed 21% or more of their energy from added sugars, their risk for CVD doubled.

Cancer:
A review of studies in the Annual Review of Nutrition found a 23–200% increased cancer risk with sugary drink consumption. Another study found a 59% increased risk of some cancers in people who consumed sugary drinks and carried weight around their abdomen.

If you drink one can of soda per day, you are consuming about 10 teaspoons of sugar. That's already more than the maximum recommended daily intake in ONE beverage.

As we go into the weekend it's a good time to check in with ourselves and take a look at our alcohol consumption. Is it excessive?

Alcohol is so normalized in our society that our consumption is probably not something we think much about often enough. It’s important to be mindful of how much alcohol you’re actually drinking to avoid the possible life-threatening effects of Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD).

The liver takes the brunt of the punch that excessive alcohol consumption hits us with. The liver can become inflamed and damaged in response to excessive alcohol use which can destroy liver cells and even permanently scar the liver tissue.

The lesions, inflammation, and scarring associated with ALD present in the following ways:
🔸Hepatic steatosis – The body’s first response to heavy drinking and develops in more than 90% of those who consume 4 to 5 alcoholic beverages per day. Fat accumulation and inflammation develop within the liver making it harder for it to do its job. Reversible if excessive alcohol consumption is stopped.
🔸Acute alcoholic hepatitis – This is an inflammatory, more severe form of liver injury caused by the toxic chemicals produced by the liver when it metabolizes alcohol. It develops in those who moderately and heavily drink. Stopping drinking at this point may not reverse the condition, but can prevent further harm to the liver.
🔸Alcoholic cirrhosis – Cirrhosis is a late-stage, terminal form of ALD where the liver is scarred. Alcohol abuse is attributed to 50% of all deaths caused by cirrhosis. At this point, the liver is just barely able to do its job as it’s swollen, stiff, and functioning poorly. This is not reversible.

🍷 It is recommended that women not consume more than 1 drink per day, and 2 for men. 🍺

Genetics, obesity, malnutrition, gender (women are more susceptible), ethnicity (African American and Hispanic men are more susceptible), and other diagnoses such as HIV or Hepatitis C can also contribute to ALD when combined with excessive alcohol consumption.

If you need help or have liver health concerns, reach out to your healthcare provider for assistance and treatment.

Is your liver stressed out? 😟 As your body's main detoxifying organ, many stressors can take a toll on the liver's ability to function at its best.

⚖️ If you're holding onto some extra weight around the middle, your body has to work harder to rid your tissues of toxins. Fat cells love to hold onto and store toxins, like chemicals from plastics and pesticides. The more extra weight you have, the more toxins your body is storing and the more stressed your liver is when trying to do its job.

🍭We discussed some of the effects sugar has on the liver in our posts yesterday, so refer back to those if you missed them, but in short the liver uses sugar to create fat and excess fatty accumulation in the liver caused by a diet high in refined sugars can lead to fatty liver disease and other health issues.

🍺Anything in excess is not typically associated with overall well-being and alcohol is no exception - its on top of the list of things we should refrain from overindulging in. It is well-known that excessive alcohol use takes a heavy toll on our health in many ways, but when it comes to the liver it can cause severe damage and eventually alcoholic fatty liver disease.

☠️Exposure to toxins and chemicals in our environment burden the liver and the rest of the body's detox pathways and organs. Unfortunately these toxins are everywhere and in everything, but we must do our best to avoid them when we can and to assist our body's natural daily detox by living a healthy lifestyle.

🥦A healthy gut is key to promoting sufficient detox pathways in the liver and throughout the body. When your gut is unhealthy, toxins have the potential to enter the blood and cause food sensitivities, inflammation, and whole-body stress, including the liver.

🍟Processed packaged and fast foods are extremely high in unhealthy fats, salt, added sugars, inflammatory oils, and chemical flavors and preservatives. Processed foods are not only unhealthy, but quite damaging to our whole body system and the liver is no exception.

Glucosinolates are metabolized by your digestion and your gut microbes into other compounds, including indoles, thiocyanates, and isothiocyanates.

These biologically active derivatives are known to prevent cancer, reduce inflammation, turn on our body’s antioxidant system, balance our microbiome (they’re antimicrobial), improve estrogen metabolism (important for men as well as women), and support detoxification.

In particular, sulforaphane, an isothiocyanate, has been shown to support epigenetic changes that are potently anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective.

Fisetin is a methylation adaptogen and a Younger You epinutrient.

Studies have shown fisetin to be beneficial as a senolytic agent in old mice and in human tissue, meaning, it made the mice immunologically younger and less inflamed.

Other animal studies show fisetin to be antioxidant, antitumerogenic, cardio- and neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory.

And a small study looking at inflammatory markers in colon cancer patients showed benefit at only 100 mg/day.

Salmon is Younger You powerhouse because of the many DNA methylation-supporting epinutrients it contains, including:

✅ DHA which helps indirectly to regulate the methylation cycle
✅ Vitamins D and A which modulate the function of enzymes involved in both methylation and demethylation
✅ Vitamin B12 and choline which are vital methyl donors
✅ Methylation-supporting minerals such as zinc, magnesium and potassium

And that’s not all! Salmon also offers selenium, biotin, niacin, iodine, and phosphorous. This potent cocktail of nutrients makes the omega-3s more bioavailable, meaning that eating salmon is more effective at elevating levels of DHA and EPA than taking fish-oil supplements!

Collagen peptides are a versatile source of protein and an important element of healthy nutrition. Their nutritional and physiological properties promote the health of bones and joints, and contribute to beautiful skin.

Collagen consists of three polypeptide chains. These so-called α-chains are wrapped around each other to form triple-helical macromolecules: a unique structure, size and amino acid sequence. In collagenous sequences, glycine (Gly) is present as every third residue. This enables the formation of the three chains into a triple-helical structure. Thus, the common feature for all collagens is a sequence that can be expressed as (Gly-X-Y)*n, where X and Y are frequently represented by proline (Pro) and hydroxyproline (Hyp), respectively. This sequence is necessary for the collagen to assemble the fibrils that subsequently form fibers, providing unmatched structural integrity for the extracellular matrix of conjunctive tissues.

The raw material for collagen peptides – as for gelatin – is collagen protein. Collagen peptides, however, are relatively small molecules with a molecular weight of less than 10,000 g/mol. The peptides comprise at least two and at most 100 amino acids. They are characterized by excellent cold-water solubility and, even in highly concentrated solutions, they do not form a gel.
