I love beans! I think they are one of those staples that are cheap, healthy, and easy to keep in bulk. When it comes to dried beans, the process of cooking them can be a little more tricky, and I will be honest, until I got an instant pot I was never much good at making them, but with a pressure cooker it's a snap, and you can make a bunch and freeze them for perfect portions. Tip- adding bay leaves to the pot, soaking, or sprouting will help to make the beans easier to digest. You can also consider what type of beans you tend to do better with. Some like lentils and chickpeas for this reason.
The health benefits of beans are myriad, aside from providing healthy vegan protein, they are rich in fiber which can be really helpful for keeping cholesterol and cortisol levels down, and providing a little balance for hormones and blood sugar. The fiber and minerals they contain can help to optimize nutrient absorption so that your food actually feeds you. Whether it's garbanzo, pinto, navy, or adzuki, I try to add these into my meals each week.

It is hot out there, and we are all probably sweating and doing our best to cool down. But one thing to remember, when you are sweating, that is your body opening all its vents and windows in an attempt to let the heat out. That's why it's important not to let anything in when you are sweating. This includes super cold A/C and fans, even an excess of icy drinks....I know I know... it's a necessity. However, you want to cover yourself from the cold invasion, sip on cool beverages without ice, but maybe mint instead so you don't wake up with a stiff neck, or find yourself battling allergies and summer colds. There are ways to remember what your grandmother told you about not letting the drafts in while staying cool. If you have any tricks to beat the heat (I am looking at you acupuncturist friends) what are they?

It's been real! Today is my LAST day at Hyperion Chiropractic!!! 4,269 appointments since October 2020. If you need me I am now in Atwater Tuesdays & Saturdays, and Monday & Wednesday.

Keep your scars supple. When the body is injured it will do what it has to keep everything secure. This is how scars work, they attach to healthy structures to anchor in and secure the wound. Sometimes these attachments, also known as adhesions can cause a fair amount of pain and stagnation themselves. By needling scars, you can keep them soft, and keep the blood flowing nicely around the scar.

People always ask me if I needle myself and the answer is Yes! If I am in pain, I always give it a try. That being said, I much prefer the expertise of a trained professional when it comes to healing sessions. It takes the pressure off; having someone assess you and strategize a protocol. It's also waaaay more effective.
I hurt my knee with inactivity. After seeing a physical therapist for chronic knee pain, I let some of my exercises lapse while I was getting over a cold. Many of the muscles that I had worked to strengthen like my glutes and my quads got a little weak. Without the support of these big stabilizing muscles, my knee joint got a little stressed, and bam, I am back to chronic pain.
Fear not, my PT left me with simple exercises to gently start the process of healing again. I absolutely love PT and when combined with inflammation reducing treatments like acupuncture and healthy diet, a return to physical activity is possible. Exercise is one of the main components of healthy aging, and as an acupuncturist I want to demystify any fears around injuries being a life sentence. An injury is a sign that your body needs more support. You need to be strong enough to exercise, and once you find that strength you can run and jump and lift heavy things!
