Money Magazines Rules to Grow Rich by #10

Aim to build a retirement nest egg that is 25 times the annual investment income you need.
So if you want $40,000 a year to supplement Social Security and a pension, you must save $1 million. This rule is based on the amount that you can safely withdraw from your nest egg in retirement.

The single most effective thing you can do to ensure that your money will last is to start out with a low withdrawal rate of 4 percent, then raise that amount annually to compensate for a cost-of-living increase or inflation.

The reason is that if a bear market hits early in retirement, an enormous loss can put such a big dent in the portfolio that it won't be able to recover in time to benefit when the market rebounds.

Money Magazine;s Rules to Grow Rich by #8

Invest no more than 10% of your portfolio in your company stock - or any single company's stock, for that matter.
In a bear market, it's tough to find a safe-haven a lot of the stocks in your portfolio will be sinking too. But don't compound the risk by holding too much in any one stock.

The most recent dramatic example of just how serious this "specific-stock" risk can be is Enron, which imploded after its executives allegedly engaged in various acts of malfeasance. But a company with perfectly honest management might fall on hard times too.

And if it's your employer's stock, you're in an even worse position not only will your portfolio be decimated, but your job could be at risk too.

How is your Emotional Fitness?

Emotional Fitness is about the ability to control negative feelings before they control you. You are not alone if bad, mad, or sad feelings have you acting before thinking. Feelings are visitors who want you to act quickly and that is rarely useful or necessary. It took me many years to learn how to slow down and think before acting.

Talking about how people can better handle negative feelings is what this blog is about. I post a lot, so if you subscribe and I hope you will, I have set things so you will get only a weekly update of my posts–hopefully that will keep your delete button from wearing out and keep Meanwhile, on to what Emotional Fitness is all about and some exercises that might help immediately.

Feelings are signals that too often yell at you to act when they visit. The heart of controlling a negative feeling is to slow the impulse to act, until you figure out the best way to deal with what the feeling is telling you. This means calming the body’s reaction so you think about what is important.

While the some of the exercises seem easy and possibly simplistic, each is based on sound scientific evidence. Moreover, diligent practice is necessary if the exercises are going to improve your ability to manage negative feelings. Fortunately, practicing an Emotional Fitness Exercise is easier than practicing leg lifts or yoga poses.
SOME INTRODUCTORY EXERCISES Here are four basic EFT exercises that can strengthen you current ability to manage negative feelings.

EXERCISE ONE: WHAT ARE YOU FEELING NOW?

Thinking about what you are feeling promotes feeling awareness one of the six most iimportant emotional fitness skills. The other skills involve taking a feeling temperature, slowing down the rush to act, thinking about how to act wisely, acting wisely, and letting go of what you cannot act on.

Check the How Are You Doing Feeling Thermometer and take your temperature right now.

If you are feeling good or great or fantastic, enjoy. If you are feeling only so-so or down, move on to the next exercise.

EXERCISE TWO: CALMING BREATH

Negative feelings create stress and tenseness; managing negative emotions starts with calming the body. This exercise is one of quickest as well as most effective ways to calm your body’s response to any negative emotion:

Slowly breathe in, and as you do, tighten all your muscles starting with your toes and moving up to the very top of your head.
Hold the tightness and your breathe briefly.
Slowly breathe out as you consciously release the tension starting with your head and moving down to your toes.
At the end of this breath, smile softly and say ahhhhh.

EXERCISE THREE: CENTERING

This exercise builds on Calming Breath:

Take a Calming Breath.
Breathe normally.
Notice what it feels like to just breathe.
Imagine a safe place.
Repeat a calming slogan.
Every now and then take another Calming Breath.
Whenever you want, end the exercise with a final calming breath.

EXERCISE FOUR: REMEMBER WHAT MATTERS

Getting and staying strong involves remembering what is important. Most negative feelings are responses to things that really do not matter in the long run. Being cut off in traffic, breaking a fingernail, not being able to buy the newest gadget, someone else’s rudeness—these are just not worth worrying about.

What really matters? Whether you are kind, caring, and fair. Scientific knowledge and the wisdom of the ages agree the healthiest people live lives based on trying to make the world a better place for all living creatures. You cannot be emotionally fit if your heart is full of anger, selfishness, greed, or hate.

Whenever you are upset it is important to ask yourself if what you are stressed about is important in the long run. Keeping perspective keeps you emotionally fit.

The quotes on the right side of the blog, are designed to help you think about what matters. Each can be used as an emotional fitness exercise, by taking a calming breath, reading the quote, thinking about what it says and then taking another calming breath and going on about your life.
