MAKE YOUR HOLIDAY SWEET
Certain seasonings can add sweetness to foods without extra sugar and calories. Allspice, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg make great additions to holiday foods. Try adding ginger to a fruit glaze. Blend frozen raspberries with a pinch of ginger and a small amount of fruit juice concentrate, then toss the glaze with fresh berries or sliced fruit. For a warm treat, add a cinnamon stick to your coffee grounds before brewing. Source: HealthFitness Dietitian

DESIGNATE A DRIVER
โTis the season for parties flowing with holiday cheer; however, watch your spirits if you choose to drink. Deaths related to drunken driving accidents spike during the holiday season. Keep yourself and others safe at events that include alcohol by always designating a non-drinking driver. If you are the host, provide a variety of festive non-alcoholic beverage choices for guests who are driving. Source: U.S. Department of Transportation
INCREASE MILES, NOT POUNDS
If you are a frequent traveler, it can be hard to avoid excess calories when you're tempted with tasty menus, large portions and delicious desserts. Consider the following tips when traveling: pack a snack such as dried fruit, popcorn, or almonds; air travel can be dehydrating, so drink plenty of water; fit some type of exercise into each day; go easy on the alcohol, if you drink; skip dessert and choose wisely when dining out. FINDING FITNESS AWAY FROM HOME
Sometimes, business travel can make it challenging to fit in a workout. One way to stay active is to carefully choose your accommodations. Many hotels have a swimming pool and fitness center. Or, consider a hotel near hiking trails or fitness clubs. Some hotels even have "fitness kits" that you can use to get a workout in the comfort and privacy of your own room. With a little planning, you can stay fit on the road. Don't forget to pack your swimsuit and gym shoes. Source: HealthFitness
MAINTAINING WEIGHT LOSS
The National Weight Control Registry has encouraging stories about people who have lost a significant amount of weight and kept it off. A few fun facts on these people: On average, 90 percent exercise about one hour per day, 78 percent eat breakfast daily, 75 percent weigh themselves at least once a week, and 62 percent watch less than 10 hours of TV per week. Lifelong changes are the key to weight loss success. Source: The National Weight Control Registry
HEALTHY FEET ARE HAPPY FEET
Foot problems can result from poorly fitted shoes. Avoid potentially painful problems with these tips: shop for shoes later in the day, as feet tend to swell most during this time; strive for at least a finger's width between the longest toe and the end of the shoe; wear the type of socks that will be worn with the shoes; and consider having both feet measured, since they may not be the same size. IT'S NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH
Did you know that one organ donor can save up to eight lives? Currently, more than 120,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant in the United States. The need for organs and tissue is much greater than the number available for transplantation. Consider becoming an organ, tissue or marrow donor and give the extraordinary gift of life.
