It’s getting boring how consistently brilliant is. I wish I had more to say about her, but damn — she just knows how to whip the Flamingo kitchen into serious magic. I secretly want her to drop a crystal platter, set the flowers on fire, or lose an earring in the guac. But no. She never wobbles. Never gets flustered. Just casually perfect, every time. One of the most fascinating chapters in PLEASURE PRINCIPLES for me to research and write was about The Drug Garden at Flamingo. It begins on page 351.

We tend to think of “tripping” as chaotic and destructive. But if you look at one example—the Native American Church using Pe**te (Lophophora williamsii) as a sacrament—you see something very different: a tool for healing rather than escape. In many Indigenous cultures, drug use is not a dark secret; it is structured, communal, and intentional. Not a way to check out, but a way to check in.

I approached the subject of “drugs” not through a Western lens of prohibition and shame, but through an ancient lens: as tool, fragrance, and doorway.

Which is interesting, because I never smoked pot as a teenager. In fact, I didn’t smoke anything until my thirties. My mother drew a straight line from Ma*****na to slackers, gangs, neck tattoos, and prison. Somehow, ci******es never interested me either.

But in recent years, with gratitude to my friend , I’ve done a great deal of self-work and taken some trips without ever leaving home. I skipped the ni****ne and went straight to psychedelics.
