One of the most unforgettable moments of my life was when I had the privilege to travel to Ghana!

The experience began with freshly braided hair from Los Angeles, only to land in London to a very different kind of greeting .

As I was in the airport, a woman approached me and asked if I was Fulani. Unbeknownst to me, the braiding style of my hair was that of the Fulani tribe!

I was taken aback by all the unknown connections and similarities of Africans and African Americans!

During the trip, I had encountered so many other instances where Ghanaian people saw in me what I could not see. There was so much fullness in the beauty of our similarities.

I can’t even fully describe it but when I landed in Accra, I felt the spirit of my ancestors. They all rose up to greet me. It was so powerful, I could feel them resonate from the bottom of my feet to the top of my head, somewhat like a tingling sensation. My tears and emotions were so overwhelming, I could not hide this intense swelling from onlookers.

This picture of me was taken at the ‘Point of No Return’. Before they would cross that ocean, this would be the final stop of my forefathers.

I knew that I was a descendent of Africans that survived the middle passage! I knew that everything I do in my life and everyday forward would be to first honor God and second to honor my ancestors that had paved a better tomorrow for me through blood, sweat and tears.

It was not until I reached customs, when one my colleagues on the trip looked at me and said, “Oh my God! Did you feel it!” It was then that my soul cried out, and I knew, at that exact moment, that I had a real encounter. I knew I was in the land of my forefathers and that my soul and my spirit had been here before!

On this journey, we celebrate the city of FX’s Snowfall, as we ride through Los Angeles to stop at 10 Black-owned businesses at the heart of the city.
