I believe that when we practice treating ourselves in a manner that is gentle and sympathetic, it becomes natural to share those qualities with others.

My teaching style centers around compassion, kindness, and building community. My goal is to leave s

❄️ Winter Solstice Yoga❄️

Embracing the stillness and dark of winter. The trees, animals, and flowers know that this is the season for rest. The time to take it slow and surrender to the ebb and flow of the changing seasons... the darkness of winter.

Our bodies intuit this as well, but unfortunately the world we live in is not always conducive to rest. Work, families, holidays all demand our time and attention.Whether you struggle with this yearly transition, or embrace it (or maybe you’re somewhere in between like me) your Yoga practice has got your back.

I would love for you to join me for a practice of curiosity and rest as we gently explore ways to embrace the chilly, dark days of winter through slow and gentle movements, stillness, and meditation.

This time of year just before it's *officially* fall always has me feeling like we're in this really special liminal space between two great things. It's still hot and they days are long, but evidence of a shift is already starting to creep in. The leaves are just starting to get crunchy, the mornings are a bit chilly. Day and night are almost perfectly in balance for this short time span. It has me contemplating on what types of things I can let go of to create more space for balance in my every day routine.

If you're interested in contemplating balance with me this month, we're going to be focusing on that very topic during a special fall equinox Yin and Yoga Nidra practice. Always open to all, and I'm absolutely always delighted to answer questions or concerns.

Class is veeeeery slow paced and low to the floor with lots of options for support wherever/however you're choosing to practice.

Link to register is in comments! There are options to practice in the studio or from the comfort of your own space. (Regardless of where you practice, no one will judge you for showing up in your pajamas with your favorite blanket. In fact... I highly encourage it!)

I often struggle (still!) with creating class descriptions, and I realized part of the reason is that we're all different and experience things uniquely. I can't say "this class will leave you feeling calm, relaxed, rejuvenated, etc.." because I don't know that it will. (Though I certainly hope it does.)

So I decided to share a bit of my experience with Yoga Nidra in hopes that it will convey what to expect. Yoga Nidra is a type of guided meditation. It works well for me as an anxious neurodivergent human who has a difficult time calming my endless loop of thought patterns. This style of practice gives my brain physical sensations to focus on, which allows my thoughts to take a back seat and chill TF out for a while. 😂 Breath awareness, body scans, and attention to the senses are a few of the tools that leave space for this to happen. As someone who used to subscribe to the belief that "I just can't meditate", I'd like to invite you to come meditate with me. Even if you've never tried, even if you think you can't, especially if you think you don't have time!

A walking meditation...

While a foresty stroll is lovely, it's absolutely not necessary! You can practice this walking around your block, or across your kitchen while making your morning coffee.

Take a moment to stand still and notice. You can close your eyes if that helps. Notice your feet on the ground. Notice the temperature and any textures (cozy socks or bare feet). Let all of your awareness rest in the soles of your feet and their connection for a few cycles of breath, and stay curious about what that connection feels like. Stability? Support? Connection? Balance? Maybe say the word as your breath in. As you start to walk, notice when the mind starts to wander, and gently redirect your awareness to this sensation. Breathing in support. (Or connection, or stability. It's all about what resonates with you and what you need in this moment.)

Keep practicing for 2 miles or 2 minutes.. whatever you have is just perfect. When I'm feeling particularly scattered, I'll often return to this practice many times throughout the day.

SPY Story Spin Off: Carly Part 5

After a few years, I finally felt confident in my teaching, and had a personal Yoga practice that supported me in many aspects of my life. Then... well ya know pandemic. Teaching virtually was awkward, and I missed the energy of the studio. But I signed up for every single digital class that I could and tried to stay as plugged in as possible to our amazing group. I also spent time completing an online training in accessibility. I spent time evaluating the language I was using, learning how to adapt poses for every person, and staying curious about the real reason I decided to stick with this path. (I might have stumbled on it accidentally, but sticking with it was very intentional!) Adjusting back to teaching in person was another awkward struggle, but before long, it felt even more natural than before.

I am not sure what my relationship with Yoga will continue to morph into, but I am certain that I am passionate about sharing these beautiful and transformative gifts with everyone! And I do mean everyone! I try to sneak the wisdom of these ancient practices into as many conversations as I can, both with adults and my own kids. I hope to never stop learning and experimenting with ways to make Asana available to anyone who happens to be in my class! Size, strength, flexibility, are not indicators of one's ability to practice Yoga. Regardless of your ability or past experience, there is a practice as unique and special as you are!
