"If I have had a hysterectomy, I no longer need Pap smears...."
MYTH 🚫 (in my opinion)
It is important to recognize that every patient is unique. Screening decisions should be individualized, taking into account a patient’s medical history, risk factors, and personal preferences, while also considering the clinical judgment of their healthcare provider.
In my practice, I believe these decisions are best made on a case-by-case basis. While current guidelines provide valuable recommendations, I am personally not comfortable recommending that a patient never have another Pap smear after a hysterectomy.
Over the years, I have encountered patients who developed abnormal Pap smear results following hysterectomy, including some who had no prior history of abnormal screening.
My recommendation is to become familiar with current screening guidelines, have an open discussion with your healthcare provider about your individual history, and develop a personalized screening plan that you both feel confident about.
