Mosquitos in Iceland may not seem to be an issue in redistricting in Virginia but it is really at the core. Please stick with me:
Global warming is happening not at a slow rate to which our ecosystems can adjust. It looks like crops will fail around the country and especially in the Southeast. Migrating birds and insects come North and find that their food sources have come and gone. I’m 78 and remember when a trip to Richmond in the spring would mean bugs splattered all over your windshield. not anymore.
Wealthy people, mostly Republicans, see profit before all else. Corporations make decisions based on profit and which politicians will ensure that profit. Corporations don’t have a way of thinking about consequences - only profit.
Republican Glen Youngkin embraced Trump’s climate change denial, pulled out of the national effort to fight it, encouraged more coal and fossil fuel use and prevented the expansion of renewable clean energy, reversing the policies of the previous Democratic administration. I believe he knew better but chose to follow the profit. Not a single state Republican opposed this action.
Democrats just battled their way through the first session under Governor Spanberger. And this is a strength Republicans were pretty much lock step supporting what Trump and the ultra wealthy told them to do. There was no debate and certainly no discussion with Democrats. Democrats seem to always argue their way through and come out with the kind of policy that benefits us all. It is often not very pretty, but it is effective and we benefit.
Profit cannot be the sole factor in how we approach global warming, international policy, , race relations, preserving our natural world, caring for those in need, and all the responsibilities which a compassionate and progressive country must address.
The massive wealth of those who benefit from pure profit and the mechanisms to deliver that wealth in such a way that they influence local state and national elections is quite simply the greatest threat to life on the planet.
That someone as incompetent , morally bankrupt, and mentally unbalanced as Donald Trump is our president is the clearest indication that we are in a precarious place in history. The constitution the courts and Congress are not exerting any influence on increasingly erratic and dangerous actions. Yet the rich keep getting richer. Is that all that matters?
So it is not a small thing if Virginia is forced to take this redistricting action to balance Trump‘s initiating gerrymandering in Republican states. It could be the one action you can take that stops the insanity and saves not just this country but the world. Remember, the man who just started a foolish war also has personal access to the nuclear arsenal
So greed, and an insane leader have the ability and likelihood to destroy the world either slowly or rapidly.
