Bomba is one of Puerto Rico’s oldest and most powerful musical traditions, created by enslaved Africans on the island over 400 years ago. It’s more than just music or dance it’s a form of expression, resistance, and cultural identity.

At the heart of Bomba is a conversation between the dancer and the drummer. The dancer leads with their movements, and the lead drummer (playing the primo or subidor) follows every step, accenting the dancer’s gestures in real time. This back-and-forth makes every performance unique.

Bomba includes:
• Barriles (drums), traditionally made from rum barrels
• Maracas, usually played by the lead singer
• Cuá, wooden sticks tapped on the drum
• Call-and-response singing between a lead singer and the chorus
