A lot of the messages I get are from parents who are either waiting for a diagnosis, or are in the very early days after receiving one for their child.

Often these parents are filled with a whole mixture of emotions that they are struggling to come to terms with. They feel guilty for feeling how they do, or wonder how they will ever feel any different.

The first thing I always say is that however you’re feeling right now is ok. Everybody is different, we all handle and react to things in different ways. That's what makes us unique, just like our children.

It can take some parents weeks, months, years to come to terms with a diagnosis. But sometimes we have to go through all of these emotions to reach a better place.

Jude and Tommy were both diagnosed around 18 months old, and I knew the diagnosis was coming way before it was officially given. Was I sad, angry, confused, scared, relieved, overwhelmed? Of course I was.

At the time it felt like the worst possible thing in the world. I couldn't understand how life could be so unfair. When Tommy was diagnosed, having already started experienced 3 years of the difficulties Jude was having, those feelings hit me all over again.

These emotions come and go, and come and go. Life is full of ups and downs, and when the downs happen these emotions can find their way back to the surface.

But each time you'll get a little bit stronger. Each time you will learn a little bit more about autism, about your child, and about yourself.

You'll make adaptations, begin to see things differently. Eventually things will click, and you'll find a way to make life better than you ever could have imagined right now ❤️
