Revenge bedtime procrastination (RBP) is a well-recognized behavioral pattern in which people intentionally delay going to sleep to reclaim personal time they feel was lost to the demands of the day. This habit is especially common among individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Several ADHD-related traits can make RBP more likely. After spending the day meeting responsibilities, masking symptoms, or responding to constant demands, many people experience a strong need to regain a sense of control and personal freedom. At the same time, the ADHD brain often seeks dopamine, making stimulating late-night activities—such as scrolling through social media, gaming, or hyperfocusing on hobbies—feel especially rewarding. Executive dysfunction can also make it difficult to stop these activities and transition into a bedtime routine, while time blindness causes hours to pass without realizing it.

Many individuals with ADHD also have a delayed circadian rhythm, meaning their brains naturally become more alert later in the evening, even when they are physically exhausted. Together, these factors create a self-perpetuating cycle: staying up late leads to insufficient sleep, which worsens attention, emotional regulation, and stress the following day. As daily demands become more overwhelming, the urge to reclaim personal time at night grows even stronger, making revenge bedtime procrastination a persistent and difficult habit to overcome.

Bile acids, made by the liver and released into the small intestine, are an important part of the body's natural defense system. In addition to helping digest fats, they have antimicrobial properties that can damage the outer membranes of certain harmful bacteria and fungi, helping keep microbial growth under control and reducing the risk of problems such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

Bile also helps maintain a healthy gut microbiome by limiting excessive microbial growth in the small intestine and encouraging most gut bacteria to remain in the colon, where they normally belong. At the same time, bile acids activate specialized receptors that support the body's own antimicrobial and immune responses within the digestive tract.

Certain nutrients contribute to healthy bile production and function. Cloves are the dried flower buds of the clove tree, prized for their bold flavor and rich concentration of beneficial plant compounds. They are an excellent source of antioxidants, particularly eugenol, a natural compound that has been studied for its potential to help protect cells from oxidative stress.

Some research suggests that, gram for gram, cloves may contain up to 63 times more antioxidants than cranberries. However, this comparison depends on how antioxidant content is measured and does not mean cloves are nutritionally superior to fruits. Cranberries provide fiber, vitamins, and other nutrients that cloves do not.

Laboratory studies have also found that compounds in cloves may exhibit antimicrobial activity against certain fungi, parasites, and bacteria, including some antibiotic-resistant strains. While these findings are promising, they come primarily from laboratory and preclinical research and should not be interpreted as evidence that cloves can treat infections in humans.

Oregano contains natural compounds that have attracted scientific interest for their potential anti-cancer effects. Laboratory (in vitro) studies have found that certain oregano extracts can reduce the viability of melanoma cells under controlled conditions, suggesting they may interfere with cancer cell survival.

One possible explanation is the activation of necroptosis, a form of programmed cell death that helps eliminate damaged or abnormal cells when the usual apoptosis pathway is ineffective. By triggering this process, oregano compounds may help destroy cancer cells that have become resistant to normal cell death signals.

However, these findings should be interpreted with caution. The research has been conducted primarily on isolated cancer cells in laboratory settings, not in human clinical trials. Additionally, the concentrations of oregano extracts used in these studies are often much higher than what can be obtained through normal dietary consumption or common supplements.

Although oregano is a nutritious herb known for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, there is currently no evidence that it can prevent, treat, or cure cancer in humans. Established medical treatments and early detection remain the safest and most effective strategies for managing melanoma and other cancers.
